The Chinese Embassy in Manila has issued a provocative statement, challenging Philippine senators to declare Ambassador Jing Quan persona non grata. This follows comments by Senate President Tito Sotto III about considering such a declaration for Deputy Spokesperson Guo Wei due to his rebuttals against Philippine officials. The embassy’s spokesperson, Ji Lingpeng, stated that Ambassador Jing would leave "with immense pride and honor" if expelled by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.

Tensions have escalated as the Chinese Embassy persistently rebukes Philippine officials. This scrutiny began after Ambassador Jing's arrival in December 2025, following previous diplomatic friction regarding the West Philippine Sea. The embassy's assertive stance is largely fueled by China’s claim over the South China Sea, rejecting the 2016 arbitral ruling that invalidates its expansive territorial assertions.

The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) has expressed dissatisfaction with the increasing barbs between the nations, emphasizing the need for "sober, professional and respectful exchanges." Meanwhile, Guo Wei continues to challenge Filipino lawmakers and officials, accusing them of misunderstanding or misrepresenting international law related to the maritime dispute.

In a bold move, Ji Lingpeng invited the senators to declare the entire Chinese diplomatic media team as persona non grata if any such action was to be taken against individuals. He highlighted that Ambassador Jing's appointment is backed by Chinese President Xi Jinping and accepted by President Marcos, who holds sole authority to expel him.

Despite potential diplomatic consequences, Ji indicated that public campaigns to defend China’s interests would continue unabated. He assured that even if the embassy were closed, Chinese diplomats would persist in countering allegations against Beijing. Highlighting Ambassador Jing’s robust 29-year career, Ji detailed his experience with intense US-China relations, underscoring his diplomatic resilience, reported Philstar.
