Police have arrested a 34-year-old Malaysian national after seizing approximately 7.37 kilograms of heroin in Nonthaburi province, in a case linked to an alleged attempt to smuggle drugs out of the country. The suspect was detained near the entrance to a hotel in Bang Yai district and the drugs were recovered during a targeted surveillance operation.

The arrest took place on 4 February 2026 at around 8.00pm, following intelligence received earlier that day from an informant. Police identified the suspect as Mr Chan Yun Ting, also known by the nickname “A Ting”, and recovered one mobile phone in addition to the heroin.

According to police, the operation was led by Pol Lt Gen Siam Boonsom, Commander of the Metropolitan Police Bureau, along with senior officers overseeing investigation and narcotics suppression. Officers from the Investigation Division of Metropolitan Police Division 1 carried out the arrest in Bang Muang subdistrict, Bang Yai, Nonthaburi.

Investigators said the case began at about 5.00pm on 4 February, when officers received a tip-off about a Malaysian man believed to be trafficking drugs in the area of Wat Prang Luang Road. The informant provided a physical description, including height, hairstyle, complexion, and a distinctive tattoo on the suspect’s right arm.

Police teams conducted surveillance near a convenience store at the mouth of the alley mentioned in the tip. At around 7.15pm, officers observed a man matching the description sitting and eating noodles in front of the shop.

At approximately 8.00pm, the suspect reportedly walked into the alley, retrieved an item hidden near a lamppost and returned towards the entrance with behaviour police described as suspicious. Officers then identified themselves and carried out a search.

During the search, police found heroin concealed inside a bag, weighing approximately 7.37 kilograms. Further questioning indicated that the suspect had entered Thailand illegally and was allegedly tasked with passing the drugs to another foreign individual who would transport them out of the country.

Mr Chan Yun Ting was taken into custody along with the seized heroin and transferred to investigators at Bang Yai Police Station in Nonthaburi. Authorities confirmed that legal proceedings are under way in accordance with Thai law.

The case highlights continued cross-border drug trafficking risks and the role of intelligence-led policing. Officials have not released further details about possible accomplices or destination countries.

Matichon reported that Investigators are expand the inquiry to identify networks connected to the attempted export of the drugs. Additional arrests may follow as police pursue those believed to be involved.

Better than filling the prisons, isn't it, Watson?

Whenever I see a "Malaysian" man in the headlines regarding crime related topics, before opening up the link, I know its a Chinese from Malaysia.
