Five individuals, including four Chinese nationals and a Filipino, were apprehended for allegedly selling substandard laptops and cell phones at the Subic Bay Freeport Zone in Olongapo, Zambales. The arrests, carried out by the police Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG), were reported yesterday. The suspects have been charged with violating the Consumer Act of the Philippines (Republic Act 7394).

The operation, led by CIDG chief Maj. Gen. Robert Alexander Morico II, took place after a raid at Subic Gateway Park on Thursday. Authorities seized 2,400 laptops and 65 cell phones, with a total value estimated at P12.19 million. These devices were allegedly sold without the necessary permits from both the National Telecommunications Commission and the Department of Trade and Industry.

The suspects, identified as Liang, Liu, Xiao, Yuan, and their Filipino accomplice Lori, now face legal action as a consequence of the unauthorized sales. The CIDG emphasized the importance of adhering to regulations to ensure consumer safety and maintain product standards.

As this case unfolds, law enforcement agencies urge stricter compliance checks and increased vigilance against similar activities. Authorities are committed to protecting consumers from the risks associated with unlicensed electronic devices. Further investigations may reveal the extent of the network involved, reported Philstar.
