Senate President Pro Tempore Panfilo “Ping” Lacson has called for increased random checks on ambulances, especially during rush hour, to prevent misuse. Lacson highlighted the annoyance and potential danger posed by fake emergency runs with siren-blaring vehicles, urging stricter enforcement against such practices.

The call comes after the Department of Transportation's Special Action and Intelligence Committee for Transportation (DoTr-SAICT) recently apprehended a non-emergency vehicle posing as an ambulance at the EDSA Busway Santolan station. The vehicle was found providing shuttle services for hospital check-ups, not emergencies. Lacson suggested revoking licenses and charging drivers of such vehicles when no emergency patients are present.

His previous proposals aimed at mitigating misuse included reorganizing bus routes on the EDSA busway to deter unauthorized vehicles, particularly during busy times. Lacson recommended infrastructure adjustments to facilitate passenger drop-offs at safer locations, minimizing risks to commuters.

Experts and authorities recognize the potential impact of Lacson's recommendations. Ensuring authentic emergency usage of ambulances is crucial for public safety and efficient traffic management. Proper checks could mitigate traffic congestion and improve trust in emergency services.

Moving forward, the Department of Transportation is expected to consider these recommendations, enhancing random checks and revisiting route management. Implementing these measures requires coordination with law enforcement to ensure effective compliance and safeguard commuter safety, reported Manila Bulletin.
