A 38-year-old Indian national was arrested at Suvarnabhumi Airport, after officials discovered 15 live wild animals concealed in his luggage as he prepared to fly to India. The arrest took place at 23.15 on 17 February 2026 at Gate C2A, BIR-EAST checkpoint, in the international departures terminal area. The suspect, Mr Naveen Kumar, had been due to travel from Bangkok (BKK) to Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport (CCU) in Kolkata.

The operation was reported on 18 February 2026 by Komkrit Pinsai, head of the Wildlife Checkpoint at Suvarnabhumi Airport in Samut Prakan province. The arrest followed a joint inspection under the Customs, Immigration and Quarantine (C.I.Q.) framework, involving customs officers, investigation and suppression units, the airport animal quarantine station, airport security, the fisheries inspection checkpoint and the Natural Resources and Environmental Crime Division (Division 2).

A search of the suspect’s luggage uncovered 15 live wild animals hidden among checked baggage in a suitcase. The animals included one live langur found in a rectangular plastic basket, one live gibbon found in another rectangular plastic baskets and 13 live turtles, identified as Pulu turtles and freshwater turtles, placed in five cloth bags. Officers also seized a mobile phone, believed to have been used in the commission of the offence, which the suspect consented to surrender as evidence.

Authorities charged the suspect under the Wildlife Preservation and Protection Act B.E. 2562 (2019), Sections 23, 17 and 18; the Customs Act B.E. 2560 (2017), Sections 242 and 252 in conjunction with Section 166; the Animal Epidemics Act B.E. 2558 (2015), Section 31; and the Royal Ordinance on Fisheries B.E. 2558 (2015), Section 92. The case has been forwarded to Suvarnabhumi Airport Police Station for further legal proceedings.

Khoasod reported that the confiscated animals have been handed over to the Wildlife Conservation Office and the Fisheries Checkpoint at Suvarnabhumi Airport for care and species verification as part of the case file. Officials stated that the inspection formed part of ongoing efforts to prevent wildlife trafficking and related forestry offences within the airport’s jurisdiction.

Correction 16 wild animals !

This case is truly revolting. The idea of cramming live animals kespecially a gibbon) into luggage for hours just to make a profit is beyond cruel. It’s not only a blatant disregard for animal welfare but also a serious violation of Thailand’s wildlife protection laws.

I can’t help but imagine the irony if the gibbon’s cries were what tipped off the authorities. These animals are highly intelligent and social, and to subject them to such conditions is unconscionable.

Hopefully, the punishment will be severe enough to send a clear message.

A extended period in confined space seems fitting for someone who thought it acceptable to treat animals that way!
