The Bureau of Customs (BOC) has issued a warning about syndicates increasingly using Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) to smuggle illegal drugs. Information indicates two methods: recruiting individuals for jobs abroad, including as domestic helpers, and offering free tours or fully sponsored trips, during which drugs may be unknowingly placed in their luggage. The BOC is enhancing border control efforts to prevent illegal drug entry.

In response, the BOC is collaborating with the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) to ensure OFWs receive warnings and information about these deceitful practices. Commissioner Ariel F. Nepomuceno emphasized the importance of safeguarding OFWs from syndicates exploiting their desire to work for their families. OFWs are advised to verify the legitimacy of their recruitment agency and employer through the DMW before traveling.

Travelers should pack their luggage personally, supervise their belongings, and refrain from accepting packages from others without knowing their contents and origins. The BOC continues to coordinate with the DMW and other relevant agencies to protect travelers and secure borders against illegal drug activities., reported SMNI News.

Key Takeaways

  • Syndicates exploit OFWs with false job offers and sponsored trips.

  • BOC and DMW collaborate to alert OFWs about these schemes.

  • OFWs advised to verify agencies and monitor their luggage closely.
