August 22, 200718 yr I want to purchase in Thailand a tom tom type device, Mainly for North East Thailand but also all over Thailand, What is the best if anything to get.
August 23, 200718 yr I think the only choice you have is a Garmin unit. As I understand, the Nokia up country maps are not very detailed. For a Garmin unit and the best maps available, check this link; http://www.gadgetrend.com/index.php
August 26, 200718 yr Author Has anybody used on of these in Thailand ?? Also any one know where I might get one in BK or Korat

August 26, 200718 yr Log at the web site, dont think tom tom cover Thailand Thailand is covered. I have it in my old P575 mobile phone, and it works a ripper all over Thailand, although not so good on the new roads in Samui or newer moo baans inBangkok, but keeps me out of strife.
August 26, 200718 yr Their hardware prices seem rather steep. i.e. It's cheaper to get a Nuvi 310 at Amazon.co.uk, and pay the extra 12,000 baht for the Thai maps, than to buy a Nuvi 310 from them. I'd have checked more, but most of the models on their web page are no longer even sold at the Garmin store on Amazon. (or are different, like the 200 on Amazon is widescreen)
August 27, 200718 yr Also there are garmin maps (user built) that are a lot cheaper than the 12k they want.. Tho the 200 I see on amazon looks like the same one sold here ??
August 27, 200718 yr Also there are garmin maps (user built) that are a lot cheaper than the 12k they want.. Tho the 200 I see on amazon looks like the same one sold here ?? The 200s look similar, but they're not actually the same. From the Nuvi 200 specs on Amazon Unit Dimensions - 4.8"W x 2.9"H x .8"D (12.2 x 7.4 x 2.0 cm) Display Resolution - 480 x 272 pixels Display Type - WQVGA colour TFT with white backlight From the Nuvi 200 specs on gadgetrend Unit dimensions, WxHxD: 3.8"W x 2.8"H x .8"D (9.7 x 7.1 x 2 cm) Display resolution, WxH: 320 x 240 pixels Display type: QVGA color antiglare TFT with white backlight i.e. It's basically the widescreen version of the one available on Thailand. An inch wider and has a 480x272 screen instead of 320x240. Edited August 27, 200718 yr by bkk_mike
August 28, 200718 yr Must admit to being very tempted by a 200... Being automotive GPS will they do normal 'basic' GPS functions.. Like waypoints etc etc I would assume so but info seems vague and its something I would need.
September 16, 200718 yr Author Thank you for the reply's, on route out of BK I bought a Mio C220, From Dinsour in Pantip plaza. It was 11900 tb, looking forward to trying it in December, The Garmin unit seams was around 22000 tb in price anyone used this unit already info would be good.
September 16, 200718 yr I've been waiting for someone to buy and report on the Mio. Can it switch between Thai and English? Something sadly lacking in my Garmins. Cheers
September 16, 200718 yr I wanted a GPS and did a lot of searching and research before deciding that Garmin has the only device that is compatible with what decent maps that are available for Thailand. I refused to pay the 35,900 baht for a Street Pilot 2610 from Gadget Trend. That unit is obsolete in the US and is no longer made. That doesn't mean the 2610 is a bad unit, actually on the contrary. The newer models have features that won't work in Thailand anyways. After I decided on a 2610 the next thing was to find maps for Thailand. Googling Rotweiler GPS maps will find a site where you can get the maps free. ??? You do have to make a donation to be able to download them. That said, I am using the latest Rotweiler All of Thailand map and although it has some glitches it works fine. I have been told that the ESRI (Gadget Trend) maps also have some glitches. I bought a 2610 and a hand held eTrex Legend CX off eBay. Each was about US $200. I upgraded the memories on both to one GIG. The complete Thailand map is about 125 MB and won't quite fit on the 128 MB card that comes with the 2610. The eTrex CX only had a 64 MB card. Maybe the very best thing about the Rotweiler maps is that you are able to put them on your PC and look at different route options. You can then download that information directly to your Garmin or from the device to the PC through a USB cable. ESRI maps will not work on your PC unless you pay a ridiculous price like 32,000 baht even after you pay 12,000 baht to have A map installed on a SINGLE device. Rotweiler provides passwords for two devices if you happen to have two as I do. The map looks for a device serial number that you have to provide. The other day I made the mistake of programming the 2610 to favor minor roads and the shortest distance from Udon Thani to Nong Hin. I couldn't believe the goat paths that are on that map. I have since programmed it to favor medium roads and avoid minor roads. It was the shortest distance but certainly wasn't worth the bouncing around and dirt roads I used. On one road (?), I met another truck and he had to back up about 200 meters to find a wide enough spot for us to pass each other. Had I bothered to look at that route on my PC beforehand, I would have known better. Maybe in the near future there will be decent complete maps of Thailand available for different brand GPS units. Unfortunately I don't think any are available right now.
September 30, 200718 yr Author I've been waiting for someone to buy and report on the Mio.Can it switch between Thai and English? Something sadly lacking in my Garmins. Cheers The Mio does switch between English and Thai and they done that in the shop for me.
September 30, 200718 yr Also there are garmin maps (user built) that are a lot There are several different Nuvi models. The difference being a wider screen. The Nuvi 200 with the wide screen will be called Nuvi 200W as are the rest of the "W" models. Edited September 30, 200718 yr by Gary A
September 22, 200916 yr Since the last post in Sept. 2009 are there now any maps available to down load from any other source covering Thailand for TomTom? TomTom website shows as still unavailable
September 23, 200916 yr Since the last post in Sept. 2009 are there now any maps available to down load from any other source covering Thailand for TomTom?TomTom website shows as still unavailable To my knowledge tomtom has no map solution here. Just get a garmin.. I picked up a nuvi 200w (the widescreen one) for 55 quid new in box on ebay in UK.. They have brand new ones for about 75.
February 22, 201016 yr i have tomtom for iphone 3gs. my initial impression is that it is crap! i will post back if i change my mind...
May 3, 201016 yr I have a TomTom GO750LIVE (Live isn't supported in Thailand) bought in Germany. The Thailand map was thorough enough, but not having the LIVE support sevice (traffic, accident warnings etc), any updates can only be applied via my PC TomTom Home connection. All in all a good map for most areas, except some of the newer roads as said before. Funnily enough a lot of streets and roads are indicated but no names supplied. The Map worked well in Bangkok, Hua Hin, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai & Mai Sae, asking me if I wanted to divert from toll roads (Bangkok), alternate routes, advance lane change indication etc. Just a note, a lot of dirt roads are now sealed roads on the map, so if you have your TomTom set up to avoid dirt roads, then you may not get the fastes route or using alternate route mode. Sometimes it flat out refused to alternate to a road that was right in front of me and would repeatedly instruct me to carry out a U turn.

Apart from all the other controls the TomTom GO750 has, I really appreciated the bluetooth handsfree capability when linked to my phone with the obvious auto-answer mode.

With no proper post coding in thailand it will always be abit iffy but on saying that I wouln't drive without it The photo is from the ESRI Thailand map and is the version before the last update. The current version is V 11.1 and I think it is the very best Thailand map available. I agree that the Garmin S.E Asia map leaves a lot to be desired but so do the Google and Nokia maps. I paid for and downloaded the latest (V 6.5) Garmin map and found that I had thrown my money away.
May 24, 201115 yr I have Tomtom Maps on my Android phone. I have Aura app and it has Tomtom maps for around the world the App is free and you can pay for the maps you want. I think Thailand was 25 Euros. It's ok some of the Soi's in BKK aren't covered but generally it gets you where you need to go.

With no proper post coding in thailand it will always be abit iffy but on saying that I wouln't drive without it I'd be interested in your definition of a 'far superior map layout' since the TomTom map does not have a major highway intersection in Pattaya as detailed in post #26. You seem to equate map quality with postal codes, I fail to make the connection. Either a map has the roads shown or it doesn't.
