Crime Police Capture Ransom Gang After 18-Year-Old Girl Abducted
Picture courtesy of Daily News. A police operation across southern Thailand has led to the arrest of four men involved in the abduction of an 18-year-old woman for ransom. The gang, which kidnapped the victim from her home in Trang Province and demanded 300,000 baht for her release, was intercepted in Satun in the early hours of the morning of 2 August. The arrest was the result of a coordinated effort by Region 9 Provincial Police, working with officers from Trang and Satun, Si Kao Police Station and the Satun Highway Police. Two vehicles used in the abduction were stopped at a checkpoint on Yantarakarn Khamthorn Road in Thung Nui, Khuan Kalong District, Satun Province at approximately 02.00. The victim was safely rescued. The suspects were named as: • Mr Prateep, also known as Long, 45 – the alleged ringleader, who has a criminal record and is currently listed as wanted, by the Royal Thai Police, in connection with a 2022 robbery of methamphetamine seized as evidence in a special operation in Songkhla. • Mr Chokchai, alias Bao, 34 • Mr Sila, alias Jo, 30 • Mr Woranan, alias Muen, 35 The incident began at 12:30 on 1 August, when the gang stormed the home of the victim, Ms Onnaparin, in Moo 3, Mai Fak subdistrict, Si Kao district, Trang. Armed with a gun, Mr Prateep forced the young woman into a black car and fled the scene. Her husband, Mr Chinawat, reported the kidnapping to Si Kao Police. Officers quickly responded by instructing him to continue negotiating with the abductors to stall for time while police reviewed CCTV footage and tracked the suspects’ escape route. Investigators traced the vehicles through Palian District in Trang and into neighbouring Satun Province. At 02.30 on 2 August, police intercepted the cars at the Thung Nui security checkpoint and successfully apprehended all four suspects without incident. The suspects have been transferred back to Si Kao Police Station in Trang, the location of the original abduction, where they will face multiple charges including armed kidnapping, unlawful detention and extortion. Police Colonel Somphong Suwannawong and Police Colonel Sakda Charoenkul, Deputy Commanders of the Region 9 Investigation Division, led the operation, which was praised for its swift and coordinated response. Community Sirinat National Park to Build Fences to Combat Erosion

The Minister of Natural Resources and Environment, Dr. Chalermchai Sri-on, has instructed Sirinat National Park in Phuket to move forward with urgent environmental restoration projects aimed at halting severe coastal erosion and improving water quality in the area. In response to the increasing impact of tidal activity along Phuket’s shoreline, the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation has allocated a budget of 4.789 million baht for the 2025 fiscal year to construct over 1,000 metres of sand fences. The structures will be installed in two phases along Sai Kaeo Beach in Mai Khao subdistrict, Thalang district, an area that has suffered from persistent erosion. The sand fences, designed to trap drifting sand and stabilise the shoreline, are expected to slow down the loss of beach material and help preserve the natural environment. Authorities hope that the initiative will support long-term coastal sustainability. In addition, a separate budget of 2.6 million baht has been approved for the improvement of wastewater drainage systems within the national park. The project will focus on dredging and upgrading water channels, particularly around the Nai Yang Canal, which is a known source of polluted runoff from surrounding communities. The aim is to improve drainage, reduce contamination flowing into the sea and visibly enhance the surrounding environment. Sirawat Suebsai, Chief of Sirinat National Park, stated that the current projects are designed not only to address immediate environmental concerns but also to support long-term ecological recovery through conservation and restoration efforts. “These measures will have lasting benefits for local ecosystems, tourism, and the quality of life for nearby residents,” he said. The Ministry has emphasised its commitment to sustainable environmental protection and has urged local communities and stakeholders to support the initiatives to ensure their long-term success. A 78-year-old woman was killed and seven others injured after a pickup truck crashed into the rear of a parked songthaew, on the Nakhon Phanom–Na Kae Road on the morning of 2 August. The incident occurred near Ban Don Daeng, in Kham Toei subdistrict, Mueang District. Police, medics from Nakhon Phanom Hospital and multiple rescue units responded to the scene on Highway 2033. Emergency services arrived to find a yellow songthaew, operated by the Nakhon Phanom Transport Cooperative, with extensive damage to its rear and right-hand side. The vehicle had reportedly stopped on the roadside to pick up passengers when the collision happened. Debris and personal belongings were strewn across the road. Lying at the rear of the vehicle was the body of Ms. Ban aged 78, who had been a passenger. She was thrown from the vehicle upon impact and pronounced dead at the scene. Four other passengers, three women and one man, sustained injuries and were rushed to hospital. Nearby, a Toyota Vigo pickup truck bearing Nakhon Phanom registration plates was found with front-end damage. The driver, identified as 45-year-old Mrs. Chanakan, had been taking her two sons to tutoring classes in the city. All three suffered injuries and were also transported to Nakhon Phanom Hospital for treatment. Initial investigations suggest the songthaew had slowed or stopped on the shoulder of the road to pick up passengers. The pickup truck, which was travelling behind, may have been speeding and failed to notice the parked vehicle in time, leading to the high-impact crash. Police are continuing their investigation to determine the exact cause of the accident. CCTV footage from nearby areas is being reviewed as part of the probe.
