Are Revolut Paid Plans Worth It?

Featured Replies

Because of the issues I ran into with Wise this past week, I decided to set up an account with Revolut and start shifting my debit card spending over to Revolut instead.

Right now I am on their free Standard plan, but I have been looking into their Metal plan, which costs $17 per month and seems to offer quite a bit.

It looks especially useful for people who travel frequently, make a lot of transfers, or rely on ATM withdrawals, since it could potentially save a significant amount on fees.

Another interesting perk is that they include access to subscription services like NordVPN and Financial Times as well as others (listed below). If you are already paying for a couple of these subscription services, the monthly fee for the Metal plan could effectively pay for itself.

That said, pricing and features vary depending on the country. I set up a US account, so the $17 per month applies there. From what I understand, it costs £15 per month in the UK, though the UK perks are different. There is also a Premium plan in the US for $10 per month, which offers fewer benefits than Metal but still seems like a decent option.

I have included a list below of what is offered with the US Metal plan. I am curious if anyone uses one of their paid plans and whether you feel it provides good value.

The travel insurance might be worth the fees by itself. But ...I bet there will be a list of exclusions/ conditions as long as your arm eg. max duration limited to 30 days etc. etc.

I have not looked too closely at the details of the travel insurance, but I think you are right in that alone could justify the fee. Even if it doesn't cover all medical expenses, it would likely cover more than enough to make it worth having. The paid plan also lets you earn 5.5% interest on savings accounts. The regular free plan I'm on at the moment offers 4%, which is still decent, but 5.5% is clearly better. USD deposits are FDIC insured up to 250K, so if you keep a decent balance with them in US dollars, the higher rate can make that a worthwhile option as well.

I have use the top Ultra plan on Revolut, at £55 pm. I switched from the free account to the paid account because it actually saves me money when totalling up the fees from transfers, exchange rates and ATM withdrawals fees when on the free account.

The free insurance you may not be eligible for:

  • Global travel insurance.

    • Your trip must begin and end at the address your Revolut account is registered too. As you cannot set your address to Thailand in Revolut, trips starting in Thailand aren't eligible.

    • at least 75% of the trip fee must have been paid from your revolut account

    • 90 day trip duration only

  • Everyday insurance

    • Only valid for Europe (my registered address is UK, so imagine it might be US if your registered there)

    • Only covers items purchased with Revolut account

As mentioned, the lack of transfer fees alone make metal pay for itself for me. The higher free ATM withdrawal limits, better exchange rates and higher saving interests rate are are also a bonus.

Free airport VIP lounge is nice, but its only for 1 person, have to pay for any other people.

I also use the free Nord VPN sub, but that's about it.

Thank you for the helpful information. Much appreciated.

  • 1 month later...

I've had the metal plan about a year, it pays 4.5% interest so if you put in enough it covers that monthly fee.

I think it depends on your needs.

Personally, since I'm interested in having no monthly limits on currency exchange, I chose the Premium plan (€100 for a year) because it was the cheapest level that allowed this.
