There were bars in Jomtien when I was last there between certain times selling 39 baht beer , all beers 39 baht

Are they still making a profit ?

Must be, they are swamped with customers, the other bars not selling at 39 and empty will be making a loss

I implore you to stop drinking GG. Be better and face the world as yourself. Not someone hiding behind 39b beers.

It's a great business tactic, the girls have to go to work in the bar 10 or 12 hours a day. Instead of them standing around, just talking to their friends until business picks up (evenings) they are kept busy.

Aussie guy (Peter) owns most of the 39 bars, great guy. Has a big house top of Pratumnak, I used to be invited to his Christmas party's each year but they've been stopped now due to bloody drunk foreigners, causing trouble, sadly free beer does that to some 😡

The 39B beers are a loss-leader. They hope the punter will also order something else at the standard price and/or think he's saving so much on the bottle of beer that he can afford to but a few ladydrinks that he otherwise would not do.

The gross profit on a Bar-Beer ladydrink is between 40 and 80+ baht, depending on what commission the girl gets and what the actual drink is.

If a punter only drinks beer and doesn't buy a ladydrink, the bar about breaks even - give or take a Satang. However, invariably that is the punter who has a few buddies he attracts to the bar that would not otherwise be a customer. I heard a rumour that some of these guys are on a commission basis for new customers, but that could be urban legend.

When I'm drinking in the 39 baht bars, I often see guys bar fining the girls.

It's a money spinner for the owner.

I was somewhat amazed last year and was drinking in that Lonestar Bar over Jomtien (big popular music bar etc)

All Beers were 39 Baht afternoons think it was 2.30pm to 6.30pm (happy to be corrected on exact times) and the big banner outside indicated it was "helping the expats in low season"

Fast forward to early March this year and a friend who was there said it was very much still in play

I think most guys buy 1 or more ladydrinks as I did so am sure overall its profitable

39 baht and similar happy hours at many bars for limited time can fill up a bar that would otherwise be mostly empty....keeps the girls busy serving a full house and yes some guys buy lady drinks or other drinks not on the 39 baht list and many no doubt barfine a gal or decide to come back to see her again as well as telling their friends about a great deal... when the happy hour price goes up to regular price lot of guys still hang around for more. especially if they have a buzz and some cute gals smile at them..and yes when beers are 39 baht many, not all, will tend to tip the gals a bit more than if the beers are 75 baht.

I think overall it is likely much better to have butts in seats than girls sitting playing on their phones hoping to get a handful of customers in a slow time when the happy hours apply. And sometimes the happy hour bars that are full of happy customers seems to be more fun than sitting in a bar with maybe two grumpy customers drinking 75 baht beers.

Girls make about 50 on a soda with a touch sold for 250

If they can they like 100 baht free money instead

They usually sell at Bht 39 for a few hours a day, just about breaking even, not counting staff, rent and profits.

If they can sell at double that for the rest of the opening time, they might make some money.

39 baht does not give enough profit for all the other nearby bars to match the price, so he's got the monopoly!

IF he has chosen 49 baht, he still would have had full bars, but all (or some) of his competitors might have matched the price, thereby lowering his customers/turnover.
