What ever side you take on the justification of this war, Trump just can't leave the Straight of Hormuz mined and partially blocked. It was open before, even as Iran has been loading up the coastal mountains with missiles on rails and in caves. But the administration just cannot cause problems for all who depend on the Straight and say not my problem. I fully believe the straight will be free and clear - one way or another. And for sure could involve seizing the 6 or 7 small islands at the apex.

In that situation Iran will then celebrate and reward the world by opening the Strait.

So Trump is trying to hand over the problem/cost/failure to reluctant allies and walk away with them stuck in the stalemate rather than the US.
