How many of you are still working past 60?

Either in your own home country or south east Asia!

And I say South East Asia instead of Thailand because this forum is South East Asia not just Thailand and it's for everyone.

But I will get back to the topic , even after my last one month visit to Pattaya , mostly staying in Airbnb condominium etc I couldn't stay in that day to day life doing....nothing .

I need to work , to do something and this folks is why I ask many of you

, I watched YouTube videos of several old farangs who had retired to Pattaya and even Philippines, yes I did mention another South East Asia country didn't I ....didn't I ..other than Thailand, but BOUGHT business's for something to do

The Candy Club in Pattaya the farang near 80 retired to Thailand and bought it , another the Irish In Bangkok O learys a retired American police officer bought it after retirement at 65

So I soon found out by doing my study that I would buy a one bedroom condo in Pattaya, rise every morning at 7 am ,going to gym , swimming pool , ....then what ?

. absolutely boring

So now I'm thinking I can't stop working and doing nothing , I should take my retirement package and .....do nothing ??

Sit my the pool in some Condominium block in Pattaya doing nothing ......as the Texan guy said ....hell no....boring as bat<deleted>

Oh please stop trying to force people to retire

I retired at 57 and have never regretted it for a minute....

I was teaching Science 'in-class' in Myanmar until just before the earthquake in Mandalay last year. I was 66 years old. But also since 2018 I have been teaching Science 'online', mostly to young students in China. I continue to teach for typically 3 hours/evening for 6 days/week, because I enjoy teaching Science :) That online teaching provides a very nice and regular income to add to my UK state pension.

In June, I'm due to start a new weekend teaching job 'in-class' at the first school that I taught at in Yangon in 2012. I'll be 67 years old.

If you like employment (especially when you are your own boss), why should you stop working?

No need to do nothing when you retire.

Plenty of cheap travel opportunities in Thailand, particularly by bus or train. You could spend many years compiling your statistics all over Thailand.

Why restrict yourself to Pattaya?

Always wanted to retire by the age of 50. Managed it at 49 years and 9 months. Best thing I ever did. I'm rarely bored. By the time I've done everything I 'have' to do, it's normally 2 or 3pm. Some days I won't bother doing anything I 'have' to do. I honestly don't know how I ever managed to do a full days work taking into account everything else that 'needed' to be done.

Why would you choose to do nothing ?

You do realize, doing nothing is a choice. What did you do for the month in Patts, that you did enjoy ? If nothing, why did you even bother going to Patts ?

If all you can think of in life is to work and do nothing. You better not retire.

Personally, I couldn't retire fast enough, and did that at 45. I can always think of something to do better than work, even if it is doing nothing. Work is a schedule, and I don't do schedules.

I want to do something, go somewhere, I do it, because I can, because I don't work.

List of things I don't want to do today ....

.... work

List of things I want to do today ...

... anything I damn well please to

I retired and came to Thailand at 49, and that was four years too late. Arguably the last four years were a bit of a pretense.

Frankly, I don't know how I had time to go to work. coffee1

Not quite past 60 but I enjoyed going to exotic places to solve problems by spending other people's money.

It was never really work just time spent in, as I said, an exotic location.

I'd go back tomorrow but alas nobody will have me now.😄

I think I will work a few more years and just keep going back to south East Asia twice a year at this time

I don't want to be depressed living in a Condominium in Pattaya ,and not going to work ,

There's guys here who are over 70 and still work.

And one thing I love is seeing their face when I ask them how long they have go of in life and nicely telling them they will probably die on the job

Oh stop trying to force me to retire please !

early 60s, retired, in receipt of pension, working part time, don't need the money, work on my terms, stress free, love it. life's good.

don;t drink, don;t smoke, don;t need bars, have friends, hobbies, in short, have a life.

Georgina this is a very dangerous line of thinking.

Retirement is clearly not for you.

You have far too much important work to do.

Three suitcases of journals do not organize themselves.

Diaries need writing

Toothpaste needs tracking

Graffiti needs documenting

Dental clinics with the word “smile” in the name need counting and verifying

Bookshops need monitoring

Good luck needs distributing

CEOs need emailing

You cannot just abandon all that and sit by a pool like some sort of normal bloke.

That would be chaos.

Also correct about Pattaya.

Wake up at 7am, gym, swim, coffee, then nothing.

What are you supposed to do after that. That entire place would be a waste of your time.

No clipboard

No high viz vest

No statistical output

Completely pointless. Take Pattaya of the list of options completely. The same goes for the Philippines.

Much better to stay in Australia.

Get up early, get the mop out for 10-12 hours, keep things under control.

Hospitals do not clean themselves.

Plus you have a structured environment there.

Clear objectives. Life sorted.

Floors

Buckets

Mop heads

Timetables

That is real work.

Not like these retired blokes drifting around South East Asia buying bars and sitting in the sun. What an awful was to go.

They clearly lack direction.

You on the other hand are running a full scale research operation.

Would be irresponsible to retire now. Unfair to humanity.

Too much data at stake.

Best to keep working indefinitely. At least another 40 years, even if you only live another 20.

The study is not finished!

People either start businesses to keep themselves occupied or sit in bars drinking all day.

How many times do you have to say things like, "And one thing I love is seeing their face when I ask them how long they have go of in life and nicely telling them they will probably die on the job", before you realize that you are being intrusive and callous?

Again you think you'll outlast older people, while being one who's always visiting doctors, weekly at times, which means you're either a severe hypochondriac or have many illnesses, which would mean it could be your time any day.

Like a few here, living your thinking on assumptions never tells you much, let alone any facts.

When you start a topic, asking things about others, you don't reply with negatives about their lives. Being inquisitive is one thing, but being a harbinger of doom and gloom is another.

I’m 80 now …fully retired in about 2005. Spent a few years in the UK with my aging Asian babe …9 years younger than me….that was before I retired…Then came here full time in about 2007.

My suggestion to you is, find a good babe, or the other if you are that way … spend your time with whoever … spend time in your condo, do the beach thing, the gym travel around Thailand. Try and find a mutual hobby.

FFS life is too short to waste …and stop wasting your time making up crap topics …….

I stopped working in 1995.

Why work if the government takes 50 % ?

I never get bored. There is always something to do.

Time flies by very fast.

I have no desire to retire and will work right to the day I self-euthanize.

I am 70 and still working.

Per my contract I am a full time, salaried worker.

Most of the year I work less than 40 hours a week but still get paid the same.

Sometime I think I would like to quit and just live off my pension.

But I like having the extra money, in the US I would not work for this rate of pay, but here it pays my rent and utilities and my transport to and from work.

I am not trying to get promoted at work, it is pretty stress free so that helps.

I know I would not be bored if I wasn't working but I do enjoy my work so...

Oh please stop trying to force people to retire

Plenty of healthy things to do not working and working can end you worse than an idle life.

Hobbies, gym, late rises, no deadline stress...don't think you are looking at the full picture.

Propping up a bar every day will not do you any favours but neither will being a slave to the machine back home...there is a healthy middle ground between you know, and I live it.

Flipped a bunch of houses in France in my late 30/early 40"s

Never had plans to retire to Thailand but then i met Nong, remember?

Still here, busy doing what i like to do when ever i feel like doing something.

Thailand is not for everyone!

Worked until mid 50s, did go back for a while delivering mail and packages at 59, but they worked us like dogs and had one day off to feel like a zombie. Workdays were 12 hours long. Sundays was delivering Amazon packages all day long, sometimes over 110 stops then getting chewed out for not finishing on time, or getting back and being sent out again to deliver more.

I'd rather have time than money and keep very busy at home. More hobbies than I need. Recently did a road trip to the southwestern USA for about 10 week and saw the sights around AZ, NV, CA, UT. That was fun, and future trips maybe impacted by the cost of fuel.

Thai wife and I will relocate to Thailand one day when she gets tired of working. I certainly can keep busy there.
