A history of Jewish flags

Credit: The author, Molly Tolsky, Tom Haviv

"Alma’s Guide to Antisemitism" is much more interesting than IHRA’s. In fact, it’s my favourite Jewish website. Try it, you’ll like it!

The Hamsa flag is frequently used by those who advocate a bi-national one-state approach to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. For such a utopia to exist, the flags of both sides would have to be abandoned and a new flag introduced. The very graphic design of the flags representing both peoples was preventing the path toward civil rights, self-determination, and peace.

Written about first in an essay published for Protocols, the flag goes to great efforts to represent a peaceful coexistence of Jews and Arabs together in a single future bi-national state.

The flag aligned with a far more broadly respectable group of thinkers, activists, theologians, and idealists from all backgrounds. The proponents of an egalitarian one state (and a binational state) in Israel|Palestine include Jewish philosopher and theologian Martin Buber.

He co-founded the organization Brit Shalom in 1927, advocating for Jewish-Arab worker cooperatives on a platform of civil rights for all in a binational state. The late Palestinian cultural critic Edward Said, exiled in 1948, who also wrote about the value and pragmatism of the binational dream, as well as other thinkers across the century from Hannah Arendt to Judith Butler.

Jews, Muslims, and Christians, Arabs, Turks, and Kurds, people in the Balkans, and across North Africa have been wearing the symbol as a spiritual emblem for hundreds, if not thousands, of years.

Ancestral myths always spun glorious tales of Sepharad, of al Andalus, of Jews and Arabs, philosophers, poets, alchemists together…But in the Promised Land, it was precisely this part of the Levant that seemed farthest away.

The living manifestations of Old Levantine World (the native Muslims and Christians, the Arab Jews) either found themselves completely transformed or walked on as ghosts. Hebrew and Arabic not only existed side by side, but were incorporated into one.

Did you know the great Jewish scholars–including Maimonides himself–wrote in Arabic?

Obviously, what Netanyahu and his gang are doing isn’t working. Isn’t it time to try something new?

The Israeli and Palestinian colors are ditched in favor of neutral turquoise and gold. The hamsa, a shared symbol in the Eastern Mediterranean, is likewise used. The flag is sometimes used by pro-peace activist groups in Israel and abroad.

Extra credit: Pick out the Mosiach flag.

Think about it, Jing. Israel's strategy isn't working. So would you prefer more bombing & killing?

A one state plan won't work.

The Palestinians would expel and/or murder most of the Israeli Jews and if you don't realize that, we don't have a basis for a rational conversation.

It's not a black and white choice.

OF course Netanyahu is a monster but your idea would be equally monstrous in practice.

Just like Palestinians have been expelled from their homes and slaughtered, 50,000 women and children killed by Israeli Jews in the last 2.5 years alone?

But no, your reason against one state plan is nothing short of Jewish victim playing nonsense. UN troops on the ground, the sale of all IDF hardware to fund a a decade of rebuilding before democratic elections. The Jews have shown that they cannot be trusted to not expel and kill 50,000 women and children. Time to take their toys away and send in the UN troops as the Jewry cannot control itself. 🙂

Of course, I'm sincere, Jing! But honestly, if I'm so clueless, enlighten me. What Jewish-themed plays, movies, TV shows and music are you aware of. On TV, there's The Goldbergs (not funny) and The Marvelous Mrs Maisel (very funny). Others. Ah, and Matisyahu, one of my favourites. Find klezmer annoying. So tell us! That's how you sell the product, Jing.

Just do an AI search and you will get a very long list.

Not going to humor your now admitted ignorance by working for you.

I've watched countless interviews with Palestinians made by objective sources showing that the vast majority of Palestinians saying they want all the land back and they want almost all of the Jews gone.

Don't play dumb with me!

Is it understandable that they feel that way?

Sure.

But that doesn't make a one state plan with majority Arabs a realistic answer either.

Unless you're want the Jews gone and dead too!

That's pretty much what Israeli has been doing, and currently is doing, to the Palestinians. The current Jewish land grab of 15% of Lebanon, war crime being committed, is a nice touch too eh. The UN needs to take over and remap the region, selling all IDF hardware to fund the decade long rebuilding process and the UN troops needed on the ground to stop the Jewry's hissy fit.

After all the land theft, Apartheid, mowing the lawn, Genocide, ethnic cleansing, Palestinians tried in military courts, this week's new law to hang Palestinians but not Israelis, there will never be a peaceful one state. The best one can hope for is to go back to the 1967 borders with a two state solution. Obviously Israel will not get out the illegal settlements, so the UN must force them.

Aha! No sense of humour. I was more looking for your own faves.

In any case, though there are dozens of contemporary documentaries, there are only a handful of TV shows on AI and not even even the two I mentioned.

There are a few Israeli TV series, some on Netflix, but the couple I watched didn't hrab me.

Mo Amer, on the other hand, is great.

  • The yellow star (or Star of David) was used by the Nazi regime during the Holocaust to forcibly identify, stigmatize, and isolate Jewish people. Combining these symbols depicts the deadly persecution faced by Jewish people during this period in history.

Hatred of a terrorist army like the IDF is quite normal after what they've done recently.

Do you support the IDF?

Nothing is below them, the most vile army in history

Apparently the new Jewish flag has a large swastika that depicts their modern day contribution to the world.

Would be a dilemma for many .

Wanting the Swastika on their wall , but then having to have the Jew flag as well .

Sometimes, it takes a monster of a leader to deal with other monsters, and who speaks their language and can be one step ahead of them, specially when those monsters have sworn to wipe you and your country of the map of the earth and possess nuclear capabilities.

they were ready to make a deal, but extremists on the israeli side whacked Yitzak Rabin or whatever his name was.

It's a failed project.

lawlessness exists because there is no plan in place and it's allowed or even encouraged by the sate.

once a peace treaty is decided, it becomes a functioning civilized society.

then it doesn't matter what anyone wants. they need to follow the laws or go to prison.

Tal Sagi works with Breaking the Silence, an anti-occupation group of Israeli army veterans. Tal describes growing up in a settlement in the West Bank and joining the military without understanding what occupation was.

Angola . also menacing.

Red and black is creepy.

Just noticed that one of Israel's flag had black and red.

That represents death and blood, as far as I am concerned.
