Iran knows the American public does not have the stomach for a prolonged war. Apart from destruction, what has the US actually achieved? Beheading the leadership has probably brought about a younger leadership which is even more radical. The biggest issues, as you say, are still unresolved.

If the US was willing to spend $200 - $500 million on rescuing one downed pilot, what value do you think Iran will assign to 165 schoolgirls?

As I understand it, Iran did not approach the Pakistanis to broker a ceasefire. America did. What does that tell you?

Iran is mountainous. It's not a repeat of Desert Storm, which took 1 million troops to implement. . It would be a logistical, strategic and tactical nightmare against a well-entrenched enemy.
