US to Begin Automatic Military Draft Registration in December

The United States will begin automatically registering eligible men for the military draft starting in December, following a change aimed at simplifying the current self-registration system and reducing administrative costs.

The update stems from a rule proposed by the Selective Service System (SSS), the federal agency responsible for maintaining a database of individuals who could be called for service in a national emergency. According to the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs, the proposal was submitted on 30 March and is currently under review before final approval.

Most American men aged 18 to 25 are already legally required to register with the Selective Service. However, the new policy will shift responsibility for registration from individuals to the government.

Shift to automatic registration

The change was mandated by the fiscal 2026 National Defense Authorization Act, passed in December 2025. Under the legislation, the Selective Service will use federal data sources to automatically enroll eligible men into the system.

Officials say the move is designed to streamline the process while lowering administrative expenses associated with the current requirement that individuals register themselves.

If the rule is finalised, men will be automatically added to the registry within 30 days of their 18th birthday.

Background to the draft system

The United States has not conducted a military draft since the Vietnam War. The country shifted to an all-volunteer military in 1973.

Seven years later, in response to rising Cold War tensions, then-president Jimmy Carter reinstated the Selective Service registration system in 1980. The system was designed to ensure that the government could rapidly mobilise personnel during a national emergency.

The registry can be used to supply personnel to the military and to organise alternative service for conscientious objectors, but only if authorised by both the president and Congress.

Debate amid tensions with Iran

The issue has recently drawn attention amid the ongoing conflict between the United States and Iran, which is currently under a fragile two-week ceasefire.

Speculation about whether a draft could be reinstated has increased during the crisis. In March, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said that a draft was “not part of the current plan right now”, though she added that President Donald Trump keeps “options on the table”.

However, the president cannot restore the draft through executive action alone. Congress would need to pass legislation amending the Military Selective Service Act before the president could order the induction of personnel into the armed forces.

Penalties for failing to register

Although the draft itself has not been used in decades, registration with the Selective Service remains mandatory for most men.

Failing to register is a criminal offence that can carry penalties including fines of up to $250,000 and a possible prison sentence of up to five years. It can also make individuals ineligible for federal employment opportunities, job-training programmes and some forms of state-funded financial aid.

Immigrants who fail to register may also risk losing the chance to obtain US citizenship.

Women are still not required to register for the draft. In recent years, lawmakers have repeatedly proposed expanding the requirement to include women as part of annual defence legislation, but those provisions have been removed before final votes on the bills.

There will never be another draft instituted IMHO, unless the USA itself was involved.

Nobody has received a penalty for not registering since 1986. No fines or jail time, if anything, denied access to federal programs, ex: loss of federal student loans, federal job training, federal employment.

Republicans writing the Democrat election messaging for the mid terms.

I believe every eligible younger male should be obligated to serve. Too much lazy pussification of young men everywhere in the west.

Could always use some more pussification!

As an OP pointed out, the US draft was re-upped in 1986. If a young man does not register within 5 days of his 18th b'day, he is subject to 5 years in prison and a $250k fine. (Good luck with that!)

Selective Service Board are moribund across the country. These are volunteer positions. Who in their right mind would agree to make the decisions to draft or exempt young men?!? You can't win!

In the interim, there have been Federal efforts to get the states onboard with denying benefits to those who have not registered. Driver's licences can be withheld, student loans, apprenticeships, scholarships, govt loans, govt jobs.

In practice, even this has not raised registration statistics. Even were draft boards pumped up and efficient manpower systems put in place, how does govt locate the registrants??? People are far more mobile than in the 1970s. Even then, they had a hard time finding grunts for Vietnam.

Aside from these enormous hurdles, what young man in his right mind would allow himself to be drafted? MAGAs, Proud Boys, Oath Keepers? Methinks not!

It has been proven the US can't "win" wars. If any war can be said to make sense, the US hasn't created any.

Young people have more sense and more options now. It would not surprise me if Canada opened its borders to draft dodgers again. No ICE in our country! (That's a joke, Son!) Nuthin' but ice...)

(Bona fides. I was the last man arrested for the Vietnam draft...for refusing to register.)

What about women - including males than claim to be women - it is the male sexist patriarchy and Trump is a mysoginist !! I think there will be a women's march organised soon - demanding the same rights as men to be drafted. Millions will march !!

Sure, women too. They will make great soldiers as my last visit to the U.S. the women seem very masculine. Tall, hevtiy, no makeup, hair in a bun, wearing caps, deep voices, walk around in tank tops and shorts. Seems many want to be dudes anyway let them fight!

Don’t know about the reference to female genitalia per se but a mandatory service for every one 6 months or a year max would in my view be a good thing for our youth and perhaps a positive contribution to the country. But not being forced into military service especially when we have a cartoon character as a president.

Would 18 year old Tug agree. It's a big ask to have every man and woman of a certain age lose a year of your life to something many are clearly not suited to. I get many young ones would benefit - based on watching youtube cop videos that is definitely the case - but many young ones wouldn't at all in my opinion. Up to the individual to decide.

Society might like the idea of peacetime one year conscription, but professional volunteer militaries hate conscription/conscripts in peacetime as it dilutes all the training and camaraderie etc!

I’d be kicking and screaming just like anyone of us kids would have been back in the day lol but in hindsight exposure to all classes and races in our society would be a good thing and if such a program was managed well it could accomplish a lot…..perhaps a scholarship or something at the end of service would sweeten the situation a bit.anyway a moot point cheers!and blessings to you and yours.

Wow, america is getting desperate.

Hell no we won't go !

Sounds familiar !

I registered as the law stated back in the day. It’s not a big deal.

for some reason that bill stalled in Congress. Im disappointed women are not fighting for their equal rights to register for the Selective Service.

What's the new policy about fake bone spurs for rich nepo boys?
