Iran war oil shock pushes US inflation to 3.3%. It’s expected to get worse

A war-driven jump in gas prices helped push US inflation to 3.3% in March, marking the fastest annual pace in nearly two years, new Bureau of Labor Statistics data showed Friday.

On a monthly basis, prices rose 0.9%, triple the 0.3% pace seen in February, when inflation was 2.4%, the latest Consumer Price Index data showed.

Gasoline prices, which rose a record 21.2% during the month, accounted for nearly three-quarters of the overall monthly increase.

Economists had expected prices to jump 0.9% from the month before and for the annual rate to climb to 3.4%, according to FactSet.

Of course, it is all lies, according to your MAGA leader

Trump team dismisses hot inflation print, promising energy shocks will 'very, very quickly go away'

The White House largely focused on that latter figure. Deputy press secretary Kush Desai said the economy “remains on a solid trajectory,” while acknowledging in a statement that food and gas prices were higher.

He pointed to year-over-year drops in specific goods, from eggs to prescription drugs to televisions, that he said “are falling or remain stable thanks to President Trump’s policies.”

On Thursday, Hassett said in another Fox appearance that the economic effects of the war are “a temporary distraction that will very, very quickly go away.”

But there are plenty of reasons to expect that the economic effects will be felt for some time. The Strait of Hormuz remains effectively closed despite Trump’s threats, and economists have long noted that gas prices tend to go “up like a rocket and down like a feather.”

Inflation will go up worldwide of course, but all for the very same and single reason, which is that an Israeli and US war criminal started an illegal war.

We knew that the ridiculous tariffs (Trump taxes) would push up inflation, and now with the war on top of that it's just compounded. Anybody who spends any significant time in America knows that those numbers that are being published by the government are completely fake, and real inflation is 3 to 6 times what is being reported. Prices in America are completely out of control for most goods, for all services and in many other categories. Simple things like having a toilet fixed are triple what they cost just 5 years ago.

Worst of all Disaster Don has completely devastated American consumer confidence, tens of thousands of small businesses are going under, tens of thousands of farmers are losing of being forced to sell their generational farms, and the economic future of America does not look bright.

Consumer sentiment sank to a record low in April as weeks of U.S.-Israeli strikes in Iran have impacted oil prices globally, a new University of Michigan survey found.

Consumer confidence has dropped nearly 11 percent since March, a downward trend that started after the U.S. and Israel launched a joint military campaign against Iran on Feb. 28. The more than 40-day conflict led to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a major passageway for oil shipments, which has worsened markets and hiked up oil and gas prices globally.

Consumer sentiment is 9 percent down from the same time last year. The survey reported reduced confidence across all indexes including age, income and political party, “reflecting the widespread nature of this month’s fall.”

Consumers’ assessment of their own personal finances fell by 11 percent with consumers expressing a “substantial increase in concerns over high prices and weaker asset values.”

Consumer confidence in business conditions a year from now dropped by 20 percent, a 6 percent decline from this time last year.

Thanks Don. Appreciate the assist.

The response to this inflation is interesting by the Reserve Banks around the world. When costs rise - often due to increased demand and a strong economy - the Reserve Bank interest rates rise to dampen demand and in turn inflation. But this inflation seems to be 100 per cent supply side - not due to demand - so the one off price increase itself leads to a dampening of demand.

In Australia we have the petrol increase and the response by the Reserve Bank is to increase interest rates - when the petrol increase itself should have the same effect as an interest increase - a dampening of demand and therefore potentially lowering future inflation. The double effect of increase in petrol price and an interest rate would seem to be a double hit to the economy.

3+ percent for MAGA compared to the dismal 9+ percent for the followers of demented Biden clan.

Trump is controlling the data, inflation is negative in the USA.

You go ahead and believe that, if it makes you feel better about your red hat, those NFTs, golden sneakers, autographed Bible, meme coin, watch, thread from his Georgia Booking Suit, and the CD of that MEGA/MAGA-Bust "Melania".

Biden had to deal with the inflation caused by Trump's new $8,400,000,000,000 in National Debt run up in Trump 1.0, which was $25,000 for every man, woman and child in the US. Had you ever studied economics, you would know how printing so much money is inflationary. Lucky for us, Biden got it down to 2.7-2.8% before Trump 2.0. Sadly, the combo of tariffs, the war and general Trumpian idiocy now has inflation hitting an admitted 3.3%, and likely higher. (As you know, producing truthful bad news gets people fired, like the former BLS director.)

Oh, and Consumer Confidence just hit an all time record low. Some people are saying NOBODY crushes Consumer Confidence better than Trump.

Hugely hilarious, on my way to see a customer today in the U.S. a bumper sticker that said F Donald Trump, and F all you that voted for him.

Don't care what all the MAGA peeps here say, people in the U.S. are angry at this admin. Horrible and incompetent.

Waaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhh.

I don't think anyone really cares, about inflation in USA. Few vocal members live there, and don't think any are struggling, or I missed them crying here.

Actually, us Yank living elsewhere, enjoy the higher COLA that come with higher inflation in the USA, I know I do. My friends & family are having no problem with costs there.

Most already retired, early, have healthcare, and or soon to switch to Medicare. All living quite well with their choices in life.

I certainly wouldn't want to be fresh out of Uni, with one of those degrees, most have that don't pay enough to live on, in the best of times. As McD's probably pays better.

Thanks, always appreciate a good laugh. as if Covid did not drive the Biden era inflation, conversely policy/action trump era decisions driving current inflation. No differences?

I was just advised that my car insurance in Los Angeles has doubled in one increase it has gone up 100%. I asked my friend back there about it and he said everything is so completely outrageous now, and the increases are so egregious, they border on piracy on the high seas. Real inflation right now in America is well over 15%.

So anyone who believes these official government numbers of 3.3% is just not paying attention, or not spending any time in sad sack America, where prices are spiraling. The beginning of the end is near, the empire is in full decline, and Trump is simply precipitating the decline in a rather dramatic fashion, with heavy doses of Trumpflation.

We must never forget this is the huckster who promised to bring down inflation in his first month of his presidency so far what has he done? For a year or two he ranted on and on and on about Biden's inflation levels. Ha! None of the promises regarding prescription drugs can be seen, the 1500% discounts have not come to pass, his crazy and stupid war has increased prices on gas, travel and other commodities and services quite dramatically, healthcare costs have gone up significantly, and virtually all his promises remain unfulfilled, with the exception of immigration, where he turned ICE into a domestic terrorist organization.

And those are government numbers. I go back to America two to three times a year and every 6 months every one of my staples has gone up at least 15%. Granted I might be consuming commodities that are different than the ones on the official government list, as I don't eat much magnesium ore. But inflation is raging in North America and the government numbers are completely fake and doctored to no end.

Higher US inflation will result in interest rate rises which raises the USD so good for expats.

So the war has a positive impact on US expats living in Thailand.

So far I'm better off not worse off.

You mean the higher COLA during biden didn't help you here in TH. With any luck, DJT's administration will match it. 2026 was on track to. Maybe 2027 will be in the 3s

Based on the documented fact that Americans just spent thousands of dollars for tickets to see Metallica in the rip off Sphere, I am sure that Inflation is not on their minds right now.

Tell me about it. Ex #2 keeps posting snaps of her at concerts, and she's got season tickets for both the Phillies & Eagles. Along with dining out a few times a week. Paid off house last year, bought a new car, and retiring this year.

One brother takes world wind holidays about 3 times a year, flies to see his son's family in FL from Philly, almost every holiday. Another cruises around USA in their Winnebago, and the other has season tix to the Flyers. Such a struggle when all 3 retired early 😄

I'm stuck in surfside or hillside bungalows for a few months a year, and have to live next to one of the most beautiful bays in TH, and just bought another $400 drone .... LIVE SUCKS

DAMN YOU TRUMP
