Deported for dissent: Tufts scholar blasts Trump’s America

A Turkish academic forced into detention by US immigration authorities has left the country with a scathing rebuke of Donald Trump’s administration, calling her treatment “state-imposed violence” after months of legal battle. Rümeysa Öztürk, a Tufts University PhD graduate, returned to Turkey after a settlement brought her high-profile case to a close.

Arrested on the Street, Held a Thousand Miles Away

Öztürk was seized by plain-clothes ICE agents near her Massachusetts home last March, her student visa abruptly revoked. She was transferred to a detention centre in Louisiana, more than 1,000 miles away, where she spent over six weeks in custody.

Her alleged offence: co-authoring a student newspaper op-ed criticising Israel’s war in Gaza and her university’s response.

Government Claims Collapse Under Scrutiny

US officials had accused her of activities “in support of Hamas”. But an internal State Department memo later found no evidence she engaged in antisemitism or backed any terrorist group.

Despite that, Secretary of State Marco Rubio personally approved her arrest and removal, alongside other student activists tied to pro-Palestinian advocacy.

Settlement Ends Case — But Not the Fallout

Under the agreement, Öztürk can return home without interference and her legal status in the US has been formally restored. Authorities conceded she had been in lawful status throughout her stay.

Homeland Security struck a harder tone, saying visas are “a privilege, not a right” and welcoming her departure.

Free Speech Battle Spreads Across Campuses

Civil liberties groups say the case exposes a wider crackdown on student activism. The American Civil Liberties Union called her detention unconstitutional retaliation for protected speech.

Other students, including activists at Columbia University, remain locked in legal fights against deportation, keeping pressure on the administration’s strategy.

‘Time Stolen’ — And a Warning to Universities

Öztürk says her ordeal cost more than personal freedom — it disrupted work dedicated to children and youth. She leaves the US with her degree completed, but with a stark message: academic spaces are under threat.

Her final warning lands squarely on universities and governments alike — silence dissent, and the cost will be measured not just in rights, but in lost talent.
