Hungry in Hormuz - a sailor's life

US sailors deployed in one of the world’s most volatile hotspots are reportedly going hungry—sparking alarm as stark images of meagre meals emerge from the front line!

Snaps allegedly taken aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln show pitiful rations: a dry meat burger, a strip of processed meat, and a few sliced carrots. With tensions soaring in the Strait of Hormuz, the claims raise a chilling question—are American troops being left underfed during a critical military standoff?

The drama unfolds as the United States enforces a blockade on Iranian ports in the vital oil chokepoint, a move launched on Monday under Donald Trump’s orders. He vowed the blockade would remain until a deal is struck. Iranian military officials now say the strait has closed again in response, intensifying the already fraught situation in waters that handle around 20 percent of the world’s natural gas.

But while geopolitical tensions escalate, the focus has shifted to life onboard US warships. One female marine reportedly sent her father, Dan, a troubling image from the USS Tripoli, which sailed from Tokyo a month ago to join Gulf operations. Her tray appeared almost empty—just shredded meat and a single tortilla wrap—fueling fears of inadequate supplies.

The complaints don’t stop at food. The same marine allegedly said sailors were being deprived of caffeine after the ship’s coffee machine broke down. Hygiene essentials were also said to be running low, adding to concerns about conditions for personnel tasked with enforcing the high-stakes blockade.

Families back home are sounding the alarm. According to reports, loved ones have been scrambling to send care packages packed with basics like toothpaste, socks, puzzle books, and even homemade treats. Yet many of these parcels have been stuck in transit for more than a month, leaving sailors waiting.

Dan himself sent his daughter a box filled with essentials—tampons, deodorant, shampoo, and more—but it has still not arrived. A mother in Texas reportedly spent thousands of pounds sending aid packages to her son, only for every single one to remain undelivered. She said her son warned as early as March 11 that supplies were “getting really low” and that the crew did not expect to resupply until their mission ends.

Community efforts have also been caught in the delay. Pastor Karen Erskine-Valentine said her group shipped 18 boxes to the USS Abraham Lincoln, only to hear back that food onboard was “tasteless” and sailors were “hungry all the time.” Her reaction was blunt: “That kind of breaks your heart.”

Yet the US Navy is pushing back hard against the claims. In a firm statement, officials dismissed reports of shortages as “false,” insisting their logistics systems are unmatched. They said menu changes are routine and designed to sustain long operations at sea, not signs of scarcity.

US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth also weighed in, stressing that all ships carry at least 30 days of food supplies. Posting on X, he said: “Our sailors deserve — and receive — the best,” adding that provisions are monitored daily across the fleet.

Meanwhile, the wider crisis shows no sign of easing. Iranian parliamentary speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf warned the Strait of Hormuz would not “remain open” if the US blockade continues, raising fears of further disruption in a region critical to global energy flows.

As tensions mount and questions linger over conditions at sea, the spotlight remains firmly on both the unfolding military standoff—and the sailors caught in the middle.

This would not be surprising considering that the US now has the least competent SEC DEF in its history, and the dumbest president in its history combined. On top of that this war was poorly planned and the US was ill prepared for a long stretch, which any of us could have advised the White House it would be, but those blazing fools were so full of arrogance, hubris, and chest thumping that they never thought that was even a possibility.

The Metro is a UK based paper I believe, which is probably why they changed the currency from dollars to pounds. Never mind, here's an article from The States

Families fear US sailors are hungry on Iran war ships, packages in limbo

Yes, perhaps you could help them swab the decks.

Well, it seems to have survived for 27 years following that business model.......

I hear the ‘Cabin Boy’ is getting worried.

I hope that things don't get so bad that they begin hanging Billy Bud from the yardarm.

NOTE: If I were and ordinary seaman on one of these ships, I would just ask for 10 extra rations of grog per day, and a telescope with a Nikon attached, and I could last two years.

The US Navy is dry and Grog was discontinued in the RN in 1970 and replaced with 2/3 small cans of beer.

that's not article, it's a google search, with results from fake news, and worse, YT, FB, Reddit, IG.

Tell me you're joking.

Y'all need to start thinking for yourselves, stop with the silliness.

At least USA simply states, USPS stopped trying to send. Yea, they're on ships at sea, why would they try to send.

You didn't need to tell us that you don't like anything negative about the US, especially if it is the truth.

How you like this one from the Times. Also a UK rag?

Come on Khun LA. You've seen the photos of the sparse meals sent by sailors to their families.

Time to step up to the mark.

Get your better half to send a 20 kilo sack of sticky rice, 50 papayas, some chillis, peanuts, tomatoes and limes immediately via the Thai postal services to the Persian gulf.

Oh, and fifty live chickens too.

'Allegedly'

Trust me as someone who served with US troops and a BIL who served alongside them in Bosnia, Afghanistan, and Iraq, US troops do not go hungry, far from it.

I bash the USA all the time. I've stated a couple times, I disagree with military even being there. Thought the June 2025 pounding was more than sufficient, for now.

If they need to get bitch slapped again, send the B1 & B2s back. Rinse & repeat as needed. F Israel, and wish USA would cut all ties, and aid to them. Let them fend for themselves. If they weren't in the M.E. it would be peaceful.

Just Muslims killing Muslims, and nobody ever cared about that. Win Win.

I haven't read too many, if any, truthful things from the delusional looney left members bashing DJT & USA.

jesus has it been that long,? anyway the fact that it has been around for 27 years has more to do with it being handed out free at train stations and similar places, and is nothing to do with the quality or accuracy of its news reporting,

I agree and I call bs on the whole story, which appears to be based on a couple of unverified photos

"homemade treats" cheesy i'm sorry but this is obviously made up rubbish yet another bizarre attempt to attack the President and criticise the military, it can only be the work of leftists, democrats and trump haters

All based on what one "anonymous marine" "reportedly said" I think that explains it very clearly, its absolute rubbish, a work of fiction,

I can't believe people fall for such fake news. Especially when they are in a conflict zone, there is a 'comms blackout', while operations are under way.

... "AI Overview

Based on reports from late February and early March 2026, U.S. service personnel deployed for Operation Epic Fury were operating under significant communications limitations, with many under a "comms blackout" for the most part.

Key details regarding the situation:

  • Initial Comms Blackout: As of February/March 2026, many service members were experiencing significant, largely imposed communications restrictions." ...

Aside from official denial (below), and as pointed out by other, who have served, that just isn't going to be a reality, < 2 months in any conflict, especially since friendly countries are nearby to restock if necessary. Surely there is a back up of MREs on board.

So do you believe the emails and photos from sailors sent to their families or do you believe Pete Hegseth?????

From The Times below-

Recent reports and photos from sailors on board US Navy warships, particularly the USS Abraham Lincoln and USS Tripoli, have highlighted concerns over inadequate food portions and poor quality during deployments in the Middle East.

The Times +2

According to reports from USA Today and other outlets in April 2026, service members and their families have shared the following grievances:

  • Small Portions: Images circulated online show meal trays with minimal food, such as a single tortilla with a small scoop of meat.

  • Poor Quality: Sailors have described meals as "tasteless" and "unappetising," including dry patties and "grey-looking" processed meat.

  • Supply Shortages: Reports suggest fresh produce is unavailable and sailors are "hungry all the time".

It's plain they need somtam and kai yang to pep up their spirits.
