Trump and the DOJ: critics targeted, lines smashed, a system strained

The politicisation of the US justice system has reached a boiling point, with critics warning that the boundary between the White House and federal prosecutors has effectively collapsed under Donald Trump. What was once an untouchable firewall is now, they argue, a tool of political leverage — with consequences stretching far beyond Washington.

From Guardrail to Weapon

For decades, the Department of Justice operated at arm’s length from presidential power, intervening only in major federal crimes, civil rights cases, or misconduct by public officials. That norm began to crack under Richard Nixon — but critics say Trump has gone much further, turning precedent into rubble.

The investigation into Eric Swalwell has become a flashpoint. While state-level scrutiny may be warranted, the involvement of federal prosecutors raises alarms about motive, not merit.

Enemies or Just Critics?

The core accusation is stark: dissent is being recast as criminality. High-profile figures — from James Comey to Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell — have faced legal threats or investigations after clashing with Trump.

At the same time, allies appear insulated. Cases tied to Trump supporters have reportedly been dropped or reversed, fuelling claims of a two-tier justice system where loyalty determines legal exposure.

The Epstein Pressure Point

The stakes escalate further with allegations surrounding the handling of the Jeffrey Epstein investigation. Critics suggest political pressure may have influenced decisions about what — and who — is pursued.

Such claims strike at the heart of institutional integrity: whether justice can remain impartial when it risks implicating those close to power.

A Precedent That Won’t Fade

The deeper concern is not just present conduct, but future consequence. If political prosecutions become normalised, the next administration — regardless of party — may feel emboldened to follow suit.

The long-standing principle that law stands above politics is now under sustained pressure. And once that line is erased, restoring it may prove far harder than crossing it.

This is likely the most corrupt presidential act in history | Opinion

That is a major concern.....

Presumably when the Biden whitehouse was coordinating the multi-pronged lawfare against the man they knew would wipe the floor with them in a free and fair election there was no concern from the left about politicisation of the justice system

The left opened this Pandoras box, and as based posters here REPEATEDLY warned it would lead to liberal tears. And here we are🤣

Why bring Biden, as usual, into this topic?

Why can you not just stick to comments on the OP instead!

Began to crack under Nixon.

Been a good few years, and a lot of Presidents since then, why wasn't something done in the intervening period?

But lets blame Trump anyway.

Important to highlight the sheer dishonesty and lack of self awareness at play here. Not surprised it triggers those that want us all to forget the democrats ended the impartial judicial system due to their collective mania caused by the irrational hatred and fear of one man(who won anyway🤣🤣😂).

Which is a long-winded way of saying that you have nothing new to add to a discussion!
