Trump’s ‘dictator rush’ sparks fresh alarm

Donald Trump is facing mounting scrutiny as critics warn of a dramatic shift in his behaviour—faster, bolder, and more alarming than ever before.

Just 15 months into his return to power, the US president is accused of charging headlong into the kind of grandiosity more often seen in ageing strongmen. From grand building plans to talk of immortalising his name, the pace—and scale—has raised eyebrows.

History offers chilling parallels. Leaders like Joseph Stalin, Saddam Hussein and Saparmurat Niyazov reshaped cities, monuments and even calendars in their own image. Even Nursultan Nazarbayev renamed his country’s capital after himself before stepping down in 2019.

But such excess is typically checked in democracies—until now. Trump, critics say, is defying that pattern, appearing unconcerned by political limits or public backlash.

The warning signs are piling up. Trump’s relatives face accusations of leveraging his presidency for billions. He has pushed to attach his name to institutions like the US Institute of Peace and the Kennedy Centre, and repeatedly floated the idea of joining Mount Rushmore.

At the same time, he is pursuing vast construction projects—a ballroom far larger than the White House and a towering 250ft triumphal arch set to dominate Washington’s skyline. The urgency is striking. He wants it done now.

Behind it all lies a deeper concern: a system that appears unable—or unwilling—to restrain him. Critics argue Trump has little fear of Congress or the courts, confident Republican allies will shield him and voters will not punish him.

Even looming midterm elections seem unlikely to shift his focus. Trump, observers note, has never shown much concern for contests where his own name is absent from the ballot.

More unsettling are claims from within his own circle. Ty Cobb, who served during Trump’s first term, recently alleged the president’s cognitive decline has “accelerated”, citing reduced vocabulary and behaviour suggesting diminished impulse control.

Speculation about Trump’s health continues to swirl. Public appearances sometimes show fatigue or confusion, while unexplained absences and visible bruising—reportedly concealed with make-up—have fuelled further questions.

Over the weekend, Trump shared “My Way” by Frank Sinatra on Truth Social—a reflective anthem often associated with endings. He has also publicly mused about whether he will reach Heaven, adding to the sense of a leader preoccupied with legacy.

That urgency is unmistakable. Trump is not just governing—he appears intent on leaving a permanent mark, from chasing a Nobel Peace Prize to fast-tracking monumental projects.

Yet the stakes could not be higher. As he pursues personal ambitions, Trump remains at the centre of major global flashpoints—conflict in Iran, a fragile Gaza ceasefire, and efforts to end Russia’s war in Ukraine.

Talk of removing him via the 25th Amendment has surfaced—but remains politically unviable, requiring even greater support than impeachment.

And history offers a final warning. Nazarbayev’s renamed capital, “Nursultan”, has already reverted to “Astana”. Grand legacies, it seems, can vanish as quickly as they are built.

Trump has always been narcissistic. This destructive urgency is new

Even if he dies, his dynasty lives on. JD would be worse, well controlled by the Heritage Foundation, Peter Thiel and Palantir warcorp.

JD is a nasty piece of work, but hopefully even he would balk at telling the outright lies and stupidities Trump comes out with daily.
