Iran’s wounded leader side-lined as Revolutionary Guards seize control

Ahmad Vahidi

Iran’s new supreme leader has been left gravely injured and politically weakened following devastating airstrikes, as military commanders move swiftly to consolidate power. Mojtaba Khamenei is alive but largely absent from public view, with real authority now concentrated in the hands of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

The shift marks a pivotal moment in Iran’s leadership — and a sharp turn toward hardline rule.

Injured, Isolated — And Barely Visible

Khamenei suffered severe injuries in the 28 February bombing that killed close family members, including his father Ali Khamenei. Multiple surgeries, burns and the loss of a limb have left him physically debilitated and unable to speak publicly.

He now communicates through handwritten messages passed via trusted couriers, avoiding electronic contact amid fears of assassination. Even senior officials are reportedly kept at a distance.

Power Vacuum Filled by Military Command

With the supreme leader incapacitated, decision-making has shifted decisively to IRGC commanders. Figures such as Ahmad Vahidi are now directing both battlefield operations and diplomatic strategy.

Civilian leaders, including President Masoud Pezeshkian and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, have been side-lined. The balance of power has tipped firmly toward the security state.

Hardliners Tighten Grip on War and Diplomacy

The IRGC is now setting red lines: no compromise on nuclear activity, missile programmes or regional influence. Attempts by civilian officials to revive negotiations have been overruled.

When talks with the US faltered after naval escalations, military leaders pulled the plug — despite warnings of mounting economic losses.

Secrecy, Fear — And a System Under Strain

The leadership now operates through tight, discreet channels, reflecting both security concerns and internal mistrust. Analysts say the structure is designed to protect the regime — but risks limiting flexibility.

For ordinary Iranians, the consequences are immediate: economic hardship, political repression and the looming threat of further escalation.

Regime Change — But Not as Expected

Claims from Donald Trump that the conflict would produce “more reasonable” leadership appear misplaced. Instead, power has hardened around military figures with little appetite for compromise.

What has emerged is not moderation, but consolidation — a more rigid system, less accountable, and potentially more volatile as tensions with the West deepen.

Going out on a limb here, but would any this have happened if the mango moron 47 had just left them alone?

Quite possibly not. But, and it is the bigliest of buts, Trump's foul involvement in <deleted> little girls as part of Epstein's world would have continued to leak out like the contents of one of his ill fitting diapers. This has bought him a few weeks, and the opportunity for his cronies to further enrich themselves.

Mission Accomplished--Regime change! If Iran only stopped funding Hezbollah, there'd be benefits and Israel could step up to the plate for reparations.
