Krungsri will also do cash advance from the teller for up to 150K฿. Fee is 200 ฿ if using VISA and no fee if using MasterCard.

Krungsri MasterCard cash advance from teller -- is that for credit or debit card or either? Which exchange rate is used? Which Krungsri branch in Bangkok have you done this at?

Just checking. Did you mean one can use a Visa or MC foreign credit card to make cash advances at the teller? The OP asked about using a foreign ATM card, but he didn't specify whether it was a credit card or debit card.

I know my Chase bank debit card has a $2,000 daily limit, and it's the same for my Fidelity brokerage debit card. So, I couldn't get 150k baht with either of those debit cards. I could use one of my credit cards, but I'm pretty sure I would incur a cash advance fee from my CC issuer.

This raises a crucial point which the OP needs to check (if he hasn't done so already), I think: namely is ฿30,000 within any daily (or, indeed, overall) limit which has been set for the card he is proposing to use for his planned cash withdrawal (presumably including any charges which may be levied by the card provider)?

I was considering getting a Fidelity debit card so I looked at their current agreement governing its use. They have separate limits for ATM vs 'cash advance' withdrawals. Those limits depend on the balances you have in your Fidelity accounts. A 'Higher Net Worth Investor' can get cash advance up to 5KUS$ and ATM up to $1500. With lower balances the limits are $2500 and $1000. I did not check out the Chase agreement.

Generally the limits on cash advances are higher. I assume that's because a bank employee inspects an ID (usually passport) and verifies that the customer is the account holder.

I only have tried cards with no foreign transaction fees. I don't think ANY credit card does not instantly charge fees plus insane interest for a cash advance. So, I've only used Schwab (VISA) and Capital One (used to be MasterCard) debit cards at Krungsri branch in the Central Airport mall in Chiang Mai.

First step is to make sure your foreign debit card does not tack on a foreign transaction fee. Some of those fees are as high as 3%. Most card issuers do impose that fee.

As long as you don't select the option at an ATM that allows the ATM to do the exchange, you will get the rate from the card processor (VISA or MasterCard). ATM, cash advance and purchases all use the same exchange rate that is set once per business day by the card processing companies. Those rates are decent and almost always better than what a Thai bank will give you for international transfers.

So, you use debit cards for cash withdrawals, not credit cards. Thanks for clearing that up. I can use my Chase debit card to get cash from an ATM (the 250 baht fee is reimbursed), but I rarely ever use it. I live here, so I just remit & keep enough in my Thai bank accts, so I don't need to use my foreign debit cards.

As per the OP's question, the Kasikorn ATM I used before in the Phrom Phong Emquartier mall will give 30k.

Thank you for very helpful reply. Is that the Schwab Platinum debit card? The differences between teller withdrawal and ATM using that card is that 1. the teller allows greater withdrawal limit (what is daily limit on Schwab side?), and 2. there is no ATM fee (even though Schwab does reimburse that) -- the teller does not charge a fee. Is that correct?

Schwab provides both brokerage accounts and bank accounts. I only have brokerage, so I'm not familiar with Schwab debit cards tied to their bank accounts. The maximum teller advance on my card is 15K US$. I got the max several times from Bangkok bank while building our house. Eventually the neurosis that has infected Bangkok bank brought a continual decline in the amount they would allow for cash advances.. then the service died completely.

Krungsri charges 200 ฿ for using VISA debit cards. Schwab uses VISA. That is the only fee for doing a cash advance on a Schwab card.

The VISA rates and Bangkok Bank TT rates are very close. See snippets below. BBL charges (.0025 x amount) min. 200 baht, max 500 baht for incoming wires. So, if Schwab, Fidelity or Chase do not charge any outgoing wire fees, then it seems pretty even to me.

Schwab should refund the B200, I know Fidelity does.

I've been tracking the VISA exchange rate vs. Bangkok Bank's exchange rate for the past few days, and it looks like one could come out better if wiring $4,628 USD to BBL instead of doing a 150k baht teller withdrawal at Krungsri provided one doesn't have to pay any outgoing wire fees. Chase & Fidelity doesn't charge me any outgoing wire fees. Schwab probably doesn't either. So, the BBL fee would be max 500 baht. The difference today on $4,628 is 950 baht better if wired to BBL (32.68) vs. VISA (32.41), 1,250 diff - 500 BBL fee = 750 diff + 200 Krungsri fee = 950 baht diff. Just saying there's other options that work too.

@JohnnyBD I agree... if no SWIFT fee you can do slightly better with SWIFT than using VISA exchange rates.

We do get our SWIFT fees rebated at Schwab. I don't know at what account balance they offer those rebates. For a while we tried using State Dept. Federal Credit Union instead of Schwab but they wouldn't create an account for my wife so we moved back to Schwab. When our Schwab balances were lower... we didn't get the fees rebated.

Since VISA and MasterCard only set their exchange rates once (7AM Thai time) per business day I sometimes would hurry to a mall branch of Bangkok bank at around 5PM to do a cash advance after seeing the US$ dive that day. I could still get the higher rate from that mornings rate update. We were building a house at the time so needed to move significant $$ to Thailand.
