King Charles speech.

Just read the transcript of that speech. It embodies the decorum and formality we haven't seen in a long time.

For a long time, I didn't like Charles much, the Diana business, the affair with Camilla, the fact his mother did not step down. But he really has a great deal of insight and pride. And Camilla makes a great queen..

As a Canadian, I am proud we have such a sovereign. I hope Canada can survive the influx of so many desperate, fleeing Americans and not change us for the worse. Into the USA. Whatever will they make of having a King and being fine with it?

I'm the farthest thing from a monarchist, but King Charles' III speech was extraordinary. If that speech was the sole reason he became King, his life is now well lived. The King played to Trump's fra

I am really quite confused as to why King Charles has even bothered to make this visit !

Already he has been subjected to and retaliated against negative efforts of diplomatic humiliation and subjugation as Trump has tried and failed to exercise his personal conviction of superiority.

In return Charles has quite effortlessly countered with bemused humor and appropriate comment and correction.

I am left to wonder if Charles were to abdicate in favor of his son if the seedy politics of the UK would improve or not?

The "Royals" indirectly have influence similar to the elite super rich in the US.

The difference is that the UK has a representative who actually comprehends the words his mouth pronounces.

That alone provides some assurance he will be retained.

Trump?

King Charles didn't really have any choice in whether or not to make the visit.

If his Prime Minister asked him to go, then he is, constitutionally, absolutely bound to do so. He is a Constitutional Monarch, and as such could not refuse. Nor can he, in any way, present his own personal views on the myriad of ways in which Trump's various antics and statements affect the relationship between the UK and the USA.

That said, a carefull reading of/listening to his speeches, perhaps combined with a basic understanding of what makes him "tick" really leaves one in no doubt where he, privately, stands; but he has not said anything! That is the power of language, as opposed to sound bites, social media posts and slogans.

Even if Charles was not a King, you do not leave a guest unaccompanied.

I didn't watch most of it, but I wouldn't be surprised if Trump deliberately sent off quasi hostile or unfriendly vibes .... keep in mind the troubled history ... US is the only colony that broke free of British rule ... and the King is making an appearance a couple of months before the 250th anniversary.

Not a huge fan of Charles or Royalty ....but I thought his speech to Congress was impressive.

Loved this line.......and 250 years ago, or as we say in the Uk, just the other week.

I wonder how many Yanks thought wow! That's what an adult sounds like.

Oh dear, another poster that believes a single data point is proof positive, and government statistics are not massaged to a fare-thee-well.

Do you still believe in the tooth fairy?

The USA dominates the world. The UK is going backwards.

It helps international oil companies, not the US per se.....oil is globally priced.....so unless you impose a windfall tax and return money to US citizens (like the DOGE cheques and tariff bonuses).........you can carry on paying $4.80 for gas and think you're winning....555

Quite the reverse, I think. The UK does not dominate the world, but the USA, under the present regime, is going backwards.

Going forwards. Real wages up. GDP up.

I'm not a huge fan of Charles or royalty either, and I made that point in another post on another thread, not only because of the way treated Diana taking Camilla as a mistress and breaking Diana's heart, but because the silly old duffer at the age of 69, still referred to the Queen as "Mummy" in her birthday speech and she responded by rolling her eyes for all to see.

HOWEVER, credit where credit is due, because his speech to Congress was very, very good and such a contrast to anything which Trump can or has produced and is very unlikely to in the future.

So, swallowing my pride, I will say, "well done King Charles III".

His speech was written by speech writers. He just practised it and read it out.

but what kind of jobs were they? From what I see on the news and hear from my daughter who is interviewing folks for a job for quite some time with no luck as qualifications even from college grads are not available. I do see that the farmers that have crops ready for reaping right now are lacking folks willing to work for lower pay. Just saying as they need a lot of jobs to replace those wiped out by AI so far this year.

To do what?

Funny and witty speach, obviously well drafted by the many aids and counsellors hovering all around no doubt. But at the end of the day, does it have any worth to America or anyplace outside the UK ? People actually don't really care about what Charlie may say or think.

That is a little embarrassing. What type of people dress up like this think it is cool? Trump is a nob but this is much worse.

Not really. Most Americans find pomp and circumstance something to gag on. Admittedly, right now we're stuck with chaos and bedlam.

Really? Have you never seen a US college football game? It's over the top. Americans do pomp and circumstance, or at least they try. They just are not very good at it. They can put on marching bands with spiffy uniforms.
