Chaweng Best hotel and hostel rated 5 stars on Agoda. 800 baht. Standard room 15 sq m. Looks 2 stars.

Some locations in Thailand have ridiculous hotel rates, we used to go to Kata Noi every year at semester break, staying at the Katathani. It's a big 5* hotel, 5 or so swimming pools, great beach, bar

Really? How many Thai hotels have you stayed in? I've stayed in 250+. You sound full of it.

Now you are just being silly. 250 plus, hahahahahha

Great comedy on Agoda.

It is rated four stars by guests on Google with 70 reviews. It also includes a picture. I dont think many people would believe it to be 4 or 5 star based on the photo.

Are you going to continue to argue about Thai hotels until you are blue in the face? Funny tourist you are.

3 to 3.5. You would have to stay there to rate it. I never look at those ratings. Only look at reviews, pics, location vs price point. A 2 star guesthouse might be nicer than a 3.5 star hotel, ratings mean nothing.

A agree with your stated style, I'd rather have a 2* bungalow, surfside seaview or hilltop view, than a block building with amenities, that I probably wouldn't even use. A pool would give it a solid 3*.

Reviews and photos, not star ratings will get me there. Though still won't pay for, until we test the bed. Rarely book in advance.

250 would really be a low number for me, being here 25+ yrs, and usually O&A 30-60 days a year, so 1000 stays wouldn't surprise me, and rarely anywhere for more than 2 days. Think I'm erroring on the conservative side. 2 years of the scamdemic, probably O&A half the time.

Gmap Timeline has me visiting 419 Thai cities, and that's only been tracking me for the past 10 ish yrs. I've only lived in 4. 1000 is definitely conservative.

Has me staying at Krung Thep, 21 different hotels, one 47 times, 19 times & 14 times, just 3 different hotels 🙄

And I don't consider me 'well travelled' like 'Hummin'

The haters sleep on the beach or something.

I book 1 or 2 nights to start. Once i know its good extend. If after a few visits bored try another. Ive done a Bkk hotel now 15 times, time to try another but i have done 20 others before. Fun to try different areas. Found a new one near gym and markets.

I personally wouldn't expect a 5* to be less than 10k a night, and better include a nice brekkie buffet or in room brekkie.

A true 5 star hotel in Bangkok

Very pretentious. I don't recommend. I stayed there in 2013 and didn't feel comfortable. Obviously I didn't belong. I prefer more standard 5 star hotels like Millenium Hilton, Conrad and Crowne Plaza. Sheraton across Terminal 21 used to be a nice one too.

That's out of our budget, and same as you prefer those Thai 5 star ranked hotels. Those classic ones so far stayed away from. Chatrium Riverside is one of the better ones we regularly use when price is right

Stayed there too in both studio and 1 bed suite, but again the last time it was in 2018. However that hotel used to be a lot cheaper before covid and now it is a bit overpriced even on a good day imo

The Mandarin Oriental has for at least 50 years been ranked among the world's best hotels and was often considered the very best. It's what a five-star hotel should be and the standard by which other hotels are judged. Prices per night on Expedia range from U.S. $500+ to $2,000+.

The cheapest prices from Expedia for a one-night stay this month:

And most expensive available through Expedia:

Sheraton Grande Suk ... nah, stayed there, and rooms dated, peeked and still need a major revamp, maybe a 4*, definitely not 5* start.

Pool area was quite nice, but way too small, and wooden loungers needed replacement or major repair, surely fixed or replaced by now.

Chatrium Riverside was nice, a solid 3+, and use to be nicely priced w/buffet brekkie included. Pool a bit small for number of rooms, and no nearly enough loungers. Needs more dining options also.

I like dated rooms. Nicer quality furniture, beautiful deco unlike the new garbage design rooms that look all the same. Absolutely love the dated Sheratoon bathroom. Here it is with ex wifey

Too dated for me, and not like a rustic look, more just old. Also had carpet on floor, that should have been replaced long ago also. We hung out poolside most of the stay.

Decent dining options also, putting in 4* star range.

I stayed in 2 western five star hotels. Could not see the fuss. Bunch of <deleted> stay in them. Just a room in a concrete building surrounded by snobs.

Stayed in a 700 baht wooden bungalow in March and loved it.

I often think the same about the number of new condos being built here in Pattaya, thousands of them and now priced at 5-10 million baht. Who is buying those?

Surprising firework comes for free! It used to be quite peaceful there, and a easy country to travel as well the Neighbouring states and also countries. I really enjoyed Oman, beautiful country, and also the people there, as well food.

I often create 5 star fireworks in hotel rooms.😆

I would prefer the same: a simple bungalow with a view. Kinnaree on Koh Kood is perfect, but not for 700 baht a night. Those kinds of options are getting fewer and fewer as the years go by, especially at popular destinations

When in Bangkok, quality hotels matter. Food, service, noise level, location, and even who the other guests are and where they come from all play a part. Their facilities such as swimming pool and gym is important. There is very few budget hotels that tics off that list.

Easy access to and from the highway is another factor that matters.

Island bungalows are 1400, mainland 700. Hard to find the perfect hotel in bkk. The good ones are 6000 baht.

If you still manage that now after years in Thailand, good on you.

The Bless Hotel in Sukhumvit is our budget Hotel when everything else is stupid expensive. Just don't get the breakfast there. We got Holiday in Sukhumvit for 6k two nights high floor and breakfast now.

Now I know you could cherry pick something that contradicts this, just as I have done to support it, but in general western equivalents are much more expensive hence the tourist thinking they've got a bargain and filling them up, which is what the OP was asking about.

As stated before:

Last year in NYC I paid $400./nt in Apr at a Marriott, no breakfast. A very small room with 2 queens.

Location and breakfast is great, as well access from the highway almost straight in, except during pick up from the schools.

Lebua was a big disappointment, still good service

Politicians from visiting countries and their staff

Government staff from visiting countries.

CEO of Big companies getting tax deduction

I have a friend in government in Australia who gets his hotel paid on Bangkok as he has to attend conventions only 5 star hotels

College Haus has gym n pool for 1300. Excellent location. Not stayed but looks good from outside.

Now, we stay in 1* hotels / bungalow preferred. If a pool, maybe 2*. Always try for a 3* to 5* view though.

At Krung Thep, it's usually an Ibis. Use to be Riverside, 2*, but recent, for location, Sathorn, only 1*. Pet friendly and location near daughter really does limit our options. Both rated 3*, and a stretch, even for Riverside, which is quite a comfy location.

They live 10 mins from Ibis Sathorn, and lots of good munchies in the area. Just that Ibis Sathorn is probably one of their worst properties. Location is just too convenient though.

Stayed in Ibis Riverside and Naga same soi. Same standard rooms but Ibis is 600 more. Has a nice pool and view though. Naga has monthly prices too. Good area for food. Ferry away from city.

I like the Khlong San side, as away from the city. Turns into a 20 mins ride to daughter, non rush hour.

Easy to get to & from, coming up from south, staying on that side of river. One of our favorite restaurants, 'Natura Cafe', and then there is IconSiam, for all one's needs.

At DMK now heading to Samui and Phangan. Holiday and Thamboon at a meditation temple my friend has renovated and built monks quarters. Old Samui family, been there over 150 years. He has beautiful hotels on Samui and Phangan. I will get up some photos. I first found the place in 1978
