Dear Folks,

Living here in Thailand, I have heard so many sad-sack stories about Farang being cheated by women.

And, in fact, this myth concerning the cheating of Farang by Thai women is one of the main drivers for so many YouTube videos, based on unsubstantiated evidence.

From my perspective, during the decades I have lived in Asia, I have always been treated fairly.

All too often, Google’s YouTube coughs up tales of woe, just for clicks.

But, have you ever been unfairly treated? Or, is it mostly the other way round?

No woman has ever stolen my house, for example, here in Asia.

When I first came to Asia, I never promised my house to any girl, in return for favors.

So then, what is wrong with this story about Farang being cheated? Do you think they were out to cheat the girls, at first, and then the girls somehow just got the better of them, and turned the tables on them?

Everyone loves a good story about Asian girls ripping off Farang guys. But, perhaps, these stories are only told with half-truths?

Mostly, and this is my guess, these stories derive from those who were failures in their former lives, ones who were such failures that they tried to come to Thailand to use their limited resources in a very asymmetric way, against a group who were even poorer than they.

In my opinion, if we treat others fairly, and with respect, then we are less likely to be cheated.

The worst one can do is to try to exploit anyone with less power.

When one does this, then there is always blowback… and…

When blowback happens, then some Farang misinterpret this as cheating, or manipulation, or, even, haha…. Gold Digging.

Take these YouTube stories of exploitation of Farang with a grain of salt. I always do.

Yet, I enjoy these stories. Probably, the Farang deserve their just deserts.

Ha!… what FOOLS…..

They thought they might eat a free lunch. But, then, the tables were turned. And they became the lunch.

The amazing part is the total seriousness with which this all gets presented, as though the world has been waiting decades for Grumpton to finally crack the mystery of why some middle aged farang with unrealistic fantasies about marrying a young Asian girl to be his pet get disappointed in Thailand. By the end, it stops sounding like insight and starts reading more like someone trying to intellectualize their own bizarre obsession in real time. At certain points it feels less like a forum topic and more like the kind of thing friends and relatives quietly discuss before staging some sort of intervention.

The repeated insistence that Asian women are “real human beings” is also a fairly remarkable revelation to arrive at after only fifty years in Asia. Better late than never, I suppose.

First Thai wife got me for a few baht, but got it back +, when I sold the house without her involvement, since I had a POA that she signed. Damn tidy profit she passed up on for being an Ahole. House cost ~$20k and I sold it for $45k. Dumb ass.

If the premise of the OP is that anyone who has ever been cheated by a woman in Thailand must be abysmally naive or gullible, this is simply not true. Thailand has its fair share of sociopathic and criminally inclined women who are capable of exhibiting almost zero behavioral clues that they are engaging in deception. All the behavioral science books and wily street smarts in the world aren't going to do a foreigner much good over here if the person you're dealing with doesn't have a conscience.

Even someone who has been here a long time could have difficulty picking up on clues that they are being deceived. Partly because of the language barrier; partly because of the tendency to make allowances for cultural differences. Even when you go back and evaluate someone's behavior in retrospect after you have caught them in a deception, oftentimes there are few clues to be found, especially if you're not that familiar with the language or culture.

You're not going to see the shifty eye movements, quavering voice, sweaty forehead, squirmy behavior that are stereotypically associated with deceptive behavior in the West. I will share that the one behavior that I have noticed on several occasions with different people is that the person lying will sometimes experience what appears to be a sudden twang of gastro-intestinal discomfort when they are telling the lie.

People need to be cautious here, and take plenty of time to get to know the person. You especially need to be very leery of entering into agreements where one side (you) performs their side of the bargain before the other side performs theirs. But it's not always the case that naivety on the part of the foreigner is the root cause of why you were taken advantage of. The hard truth is that there are people over here who are psychologically inclined towards criminal behavior and feel little remorse when they take advantage of people.

OP ignores the fact that Thai land ownership laws, widespread misunderstanding in the expat community about how Thai marital property law works, and wealth and income disparities between Thai women and foreign men create powerful incentives for Thai women to disingenuously enter into romantic relationships with foreign men for financial gain.

There are far too many guys who give Western women far too much credit. Many are unfaithful, many are conniving, many are in it just for the money, and many are unworthy. In general I considered Thai women to be infinitely superior to their Western counterparts on a dozen different levels.

The problem with all of these units is that you have to be into that bald beaver look. Otherwise, they are a complete non starter for some people. Until they figure out how to design these things with a full minge forest that you can trim to your liking, and that grows back after a full shaving session, a lot of people just aren't interested.
