Trump Hints Poland Could Get US Troops Pulled From Germany

President Donald Trump has suggested thousands of American troops being withdrawn from Germany could instead be stationed in Poland — a move that would mark a major shift in the US military footprint across Europe and heap fresh pressure on already strained transatlantic relations.

Speaking to reporters on Friday, Trump said Poland “might” receive some of the 5,000 US servicemembers the Pentagon plans to remove from Germany over the next year.

“Poland would like that,” Trump said. “We have a great relationship with Poland. I have a great relationship with the president… I like him a lot, so that’s possible.”

The comments came just one day after Polish President Karol Nawrocki publicly offered to host the troops, insisting Warsaw already has the infrastructure in place to support a larger permanent American military presence.

Germany Faces Growing Rift With Washington

The Pentagon confirmed earlier this month that around 5,000 US troops would leave Germany, though Trump hinted the cuts could go much further.

“We’ll be cutting a lot further than 5,000,” he warned.

The move follows increasingly open tensions between Trump and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, particularly over the Iran war and wider NATO burden-sharing disputes.

Trump has repeatedly blasted Merz online, accusing him of doing a “terrible job” and attacking Germany’s immigration and energy policies. He has also floated the idea of reducing troop deployments in Italy and Spain.

Germany currently hosts more than 36,000 active-duty American troops, with bases such as Ramstein Air Base serving as crucial hubs for NATO logistics, air operations and intelligence.

The American military presence also supports thousands of German jobs and pumps billions into local economies.

German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius attempted to downplay the announcement, saying the possibility of troop reductions had been “foreseeable,” while stressing that the US presence in Europe remained in both countries’ interests.

Poland Sees Opportunity As NATO’s Eastern Flank Hardens

For Poland, however, the potential redeployment represents a geopolitical win.

Warsaw has spent years pushing for a stronger US military footprint as fears grow over Russia and instability on NATO’s eastern flank. Polish leaders argue that American forces stationed closer to Eastern Europe would improve deterrence and strengthen regional security.

“Everyone is aware that the presence of American troops… increases security,” Nawrocki declared.

The possible shift would also symbolise a broader realignment inside NATO — with Washington appearing increasingly frustrated by Western European powers while building tighter ties with more hawkish Eastern European allies.

A Historic Strategic Shift

US forces have remained in Germany continuously since World War II, peaking at more than 250,000 troops during the Cold War.

For decades, Germany acted as the centrepiece of America’s military presence in Europe.

Now, Trump’s remarks suggest that strategic centre of gravity could gradually be shifting eastward — away from Berlin and toward Warsaw — as Washington reshapes its alliances for a far more unstable world order.
