Trump's Cuba squeeze pushes island towards the brink

Cuba is sliding deeper into crisis, with conditions deteriorating sharply under a US oil embargo that has tightened pressure on the communist-run island since January. What was already a country struggling with blackouts, shortages and economic stagnation now appears to be edging towards a far more dangerous tipping point — one that could ultimately force the White House to confront the fallout of its own strategy.

A Crisis Accelerates

Just months ago, daily life in Cuba was already marked by long queues, empty state-run shops and rolling power cuts. Now the situation has worsened dramatically.

The government says it has exhausted its fuel supplies. The consequences are visible everywhere: longer blackouts, fewer vehicles on the roads, mounting rubbish in the streets and growing disruption to basic services. The sense is no longer of decline, but of a system struggling to function.

Healthcare's Slow Unravelling

The strain is especially visible in healthcare, once regarded as one of Cuba's proudest achievements.

Hospitals and clinics increasingly rely on the commitment of overstretched staff and the efforts of ordinary citizens who source medicines and equipment for relatives themselves. A sector that once projected national confidence is now operating under severe pressure, exposing the wider fragility of the Cuban state.

Washington Turns Up The Heat

For the Trump administration, economic pressure is intended to force political change. Many within the Cuban-American community support the removal of the communist leadership and the end of the Castro family's lingering influence.

President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio have made no secret of their desire to see fundamental change in Havana. Whether that means outright regime change or greater compliance remains an open question.

Cubans Want Change — But Not Chaos

Yet the mood inside Cuba appears more nuanced than the rhetoric coming from abroad.

Many Cubans express frustration with state controls and favour greater private enterprise, economic reform and improved access to food and electricity. But there is little enthusiasm for foreign intervention, military involvement or a wholesale embrace of unfettered capitalism.

Instead, many appear to envision a system combining social protections, strong public services and a more dynamic private economy.

The Risk Of A Day After

The biggest question may not be whether Cuba can withstand the pressure, but what happens if it cannot.

After more than six decades of communist rule and US sanctions, any collapse would carry enormous consequences. Mass migration, political instability and humanitarian challenges would not remain confined to the island.

If economic warfare succeeds where decades of pressure have failed, Washington may soon face a question more difficult than bringing Cuba to the brink: what comes next after the fall.

If Cuba collapses, Trump will be forced to deal with the consequences of his actions

Trump doesn’t give a f**k about the Cubans. It’s just another opportunity for him to make money on hotels and property deals with his cronies Witkoff and Kushner.
