Why no British or Irish pubs outside of Sukhumvit?

You need to educate yourself. SOCCER was so named to differentiate between Association Football and Rugby, which unfortunately is, in USA, called American Football, even though it is played mostly with the hands. In Soccer, if a ball is played with the hand, it is a foul.

Now back on topic. Cannot get a decent pint or a big TV here in Phitsanulok. Must stay at home with me cans.

I think you will find that in the USA Rugby is called RUGBY. It is governed by USA Rugby. American Football may have evolved from Rugby but is a very different sport. Your post managed to be factually incorrect yet patronising at the same time.

I think you will find it is YOU who needs to educate yourself.

No please, you educate me. Football as I know it is Soccer in USA, Aus and UK. Rugby is called Rugby Union or League, two different games, what is International Rugby called?

And the game where highly protected players throw an egg shaped ball to eacjh other, sometimes a kick or two, a play lasting a minute before setting up again after being told where to run, and the whole game lasting about 4 hours.

I don't wantto argue with you, and at 78 I have had enough education.

Because there are far too much British and Irish in Thailand already. Why the heck do you people move to Thailand to find your beer and food? Better you guys stay home and go meet friends at after work bars. The younger guys will just love to talk to the dinosaurs! 😂

What a stupid comment. Nobody moved here to find English / Irish food.

I've lived here over 30 years, since I was 21. I'm not a dinosaur. I like Thai food, I like all sorts of food. If I hang out with Thai mates it'll be in Thai pubs. Sometimes I want to go and hang out in an English pub, have a few pints and have a nice steak and ale pie. What's wrong with that?

In your eyes if you live here you can only exclusively eat Thai food and drink Thai beer in Thai bars with Thai people. You can't eat Italian, or Japanese, or Mexican, or Indian, or anything.

When did post that? Where do you get it all from?

Of course, I don´t mean you cannot eat international food if you live in Thailand. I am not a dinosaur either. I moved here at the age of 28 and lived here for a bit more than 28 years now. So, we seem to be at approx. the same age. What I am saying is that there are enough choices when you want to eat English, Italian, German, Mexican or even, in my case, Swedish food. The times you wish to do that, it´s really no problem getting to a place that serves such food. You don´t need it in every place. So, that´s how it looks in my eyes.

And, actually, some people moved here and can´t eat Thai food. Quite many, actually!

Thai food is always exceptional at an English pub.

My GF just had a green curry at the Robin Hood pub and said it was as good as what she makes.

$.89 pad krapow at the Royal Oak is a lunchtime standard for me.

Once again:

-he doesn’t go to these kinds of places, but comically represents himself as a hardened traveler who is simply above these kinds of places.

-he does this odd purist posturing not to backpackers, who he also disdains, but to comfortably well off residents who don’t have to cram 30 pad Thais into a short sex tourism break. He is a two week millionaire without the millionaire part.

-his eternal complaint here is: why aren’t you exactly like me? I’m here every day telling you how to be, why aren’t you listening to me?

-฿300 for a hamburger may as well be 3 million. He’s just too broke to eat anything but meat on a stick from a vendor.

Ther Thais know that when there is a place that's popular with certain foreigners, Irish, Brits, etc, they will surely make sure there is good Thai food there along with the foreign fare, as many of the foreigners wives will still like Thai food while their hubbies have back home grub.

There's a bar here in Sisaket province owned by Thais that foreigners frequent as they have pretty decent foreign food, along with good beer, pool and Thai food.

I'm not a bar person unless a friend goes and there's food, so I've been there a few times with friends. If there were an Irish or Brit pub close to me I would go to try the food and a Guinness.

I didn't, and I would never. Not a bad version for a 'western' themed venue ...

Americans don't call it soccer?

They beat Turkey! Might upset a few. Soccer is big in Melbourne with all the <deleted> and western Sydney.

If we are on the subject of history.

Football is so called because it is a game played on foot. Unlike most ball games played at the time (i.e.Polo) which were on horseback. The proletariat mainly didn't own horses so they played on foot. So even rugby where you pick up the ball is called football; because it is played on foot.

I watched the Australia/Turkey match on my VPN - one of the few that will ever start at 11 am Bangkok. I wonder how many pubs broadcast it in Bangkok? You need a bit of a sneaky workaround to actually do this.

Oh, and good job Scotland!

Two great goals. Their pool group is not to hard. Hopefully they beat the yanks.

Their defence is excellent - so is their goalie. What time is the Seattle match (USA/Aus)?

Fantastic result for the Roos. A point against USA or Paraguay and they are through to the knockout stages. Quite likely they could go through without grabbing another point as 8 out of the 12 third place teams go through. A +2 goal difference already gives them a great chance. Quite intrigued which word got deleted from your post above - obviously can't repeat it as it will be deleted again.

Volley ball, hand ball, netball, croquet, all played on the feet.

W word. Slang but meant as no harm these days. My friend is half Italian and he calls himself half W.

But the team looks talented. Maybe they can make Semis.

I think that should be 02.00am on the 20th June Thai time. The Paraguay game should be 09.00am 26th June Thai time. I'm a couple of bevies in though so could be wrong.

Surprising what you can't get away with calling people these days as most of it is not meant as derogatory. Calling people from Britain Brits = fine. Calling people from Pakistan by the first 5 letters = getting banged up. Crazy times.

Correct on both counts. Have another drink.

Don't mind if I do, thanks. Cheers 🍻 I would add I've only just arrived back in Thailand after a trip back to the UK. I have been nipping on a Singha so just enjoying a couple in the hotel.

I've wondered this for years. Did google map searches, etc.

Why no British or Irish pubs outside of the Sukhumvit area (and Sala Daeng)? There are many potential customers (farangs and middle class Thais) living just north of Sukhumvit (along the BTS line) who would love draft beer and pub grub.

For context, if you use the BTS as your compass, there are no Irish or British pubs north of BTS Ploen Chit. So really they are all concentrated between Nana and Phrom Phom - and there are many there. Also a couple around Sala Daeng. But outside of those small corridors. Nothing.

It's true there are plenty of hole-in-the-wall Thai bars outside of that area (mostly around BTS Ari) - some are ok, and a couple of Thai 'pubs' do exist that cater to the military between Sanam Pao and Saphan Kwai. Maybe not so comfortable for farangs.

And yes, there's the Thai Saxaphone bar at Victory Monument. But really the area could do with a real British or Irish pub. Maybe around or between BTS Ari and BTS Saphan Kwai stations? Chatuchak? Maybe there would be a foreign clientele out the other way - around On Nut?

Maybe there's not a lot of demand to drink in a pub full of whining Brits?

No real attraction for me.

Thank heavens for that.

There is a high demand for us whining Brits. Where else are we going to go? An Aussie pub like "The Two Short Arms" (so tight they won't buy a round) or the "The Bogan's Arm"? (would normally be "Arms" but most are so thick they have lost one of them in an accident).

Yeah, I'd settle for a Tiger pint too.

I guess the other reason imported draft isn't carried by many is because the keg is quite big and has to be used up within 5 days or so or it goes flat - so that's expensive if they get through only part of a keg (though Heineken is made locally)

The beer is held under gas pressure. Can't go flat.

You could always go home.

Correct. Croquet? Hmmm. Not exactly a running game. More a Sunday pastime. Like bowls.

Why would I do that? If I walk into a pub in London I've still got to put up with a mullet headed bogan on £3 an hour serving me my pint. Might as well bump into the half wits over here in the sunshine. 555

Beerlao Dark is my fav drop. Some 7/11s have it. Common in Udon and Nong Khai.
