Used NakornPing when I lived in town.

Changed to San Sai when they rebuilt 4 years back ........ all top line new equipment

Long waits for routine visits, haven't found any way to avoid, but very quick emergency care.

Clint Eastwood is a very good actor and producer, and Buddy Guy is a very good blues guitarist that's influenced many players. The OP didn't say, but my sense is he's living in a rural area of Thailand.

Moving back to a home country solely on the premise of cheaper/better health care is a personal decision based upon one's health. But when talking about costs in general, one needs to consider all the other costs of relocating. In Thailand he probably wouldn't need to pay tax on his pension - or at least only what is remitted. In Australia, I guess his worldwide income will be taxed in full. The there is the issue of housing. If he still has a place in Aus then that's good. If no place, then welcome to the rat race of finding a rental or paying through the nose to buy an inflated apartment. Because Australian wages are pretty good by Western standards, he can expect everything to cost more than it did when he lived there before.

There is an informal 'policy' for ambulances to take Expats to private hospitals - I know of two blokes in Pattaya that had that happen to them, and another in Udon Thani. I also know of blokes out in the (non-Expat) boondocks where they were taken to a Thai Hospital and treated there. Plus I know one bloke in an Expat tourist area that was taken to the Thai hospital by a friend and they stabilised him and then sent him to the nearby private hospital in an ambulance. I guess it depends on where you are located in Thailand and the situation locally.

Regarding the tax issues - I am talking about what will probably happen when Thailand implements their new taxation system - but as I have also said it is not guaranteed. The standard Aust Pension is taxable income in Thailand - the DTA does not exclude it unless you are getting the CSS Pension as a former employee of the Government. Likewise, Superannuation earnings and payments in Australia are taxable income in Thailand. Both of those sources of money/income are not taxed in Australia due to allowances and exemptions (which dont exist in Thailand). Will Thailand do what Philippines and Malaysia have done and exclude foreign income that has been subjected to that country's tax system - I hope so.

The wife and I have lived in Australia before for years in total - as I said, she is a Citizen too. I can assure you Australia is not a lot more expensive than Thailand nowadays - if you manage your expenditures and dont go to restaurants especially. The big one for us is that in Australia golf is 25% of the costs here in Thailand - we play every week and that reduction in our budget covers a lot of other things. Yes - the costs of medical treatments in USA and some other countries is far above even the Thailand private hospitals - we are lucky to be Australian Citizens. There are Pros and Cons but for me the main thing is that the medical costs and quality are not worth it here.
