That's the problem here, you can't safely invest money and make money, as there is always some sly shenanigans or government policy 180 about to happen, or suddenly laws are so strictly enforced after you were lied to, then you lose everything.

Anyone with any sense would've worked that out a long time ago. It's the chancers who get caught out. I don't have any sympathy for chancers.

20+ years ago I was offered some land on Samui. I was told exactly how I could get around the land ownership laws. I declined because I knew it was risky.

The chaos of Thailand versus more developed western countries is part of it's charm. But it's also the reason I wouldn't bet my life's savings on an 'investment' here.

Doesn't show those Thai lawyers in a good light, what about ethics, any way give it a few months and business as usual

A Thai lawyer with ethics. 😱 Where????

yes, it was technically illegal

Thailand is so consistently inconsistent with the application of the law they've made illegality de facto legal.

They know it is time to keep a low profile and get ready to pay their way out of possible accountability.

Very true.

Slightly depressing that once everything dies down, they will be back out there touting ways for a foreigner to own land and a business.

Businesses in Pai are now being investigated

Look forward to reading about the results of their endeavors.

I stick to the rules and am getting a bit peed off by having to jump through more and more hoops because of those who don’t.

They may have a lot of power, but I'd bet their businesses will dry up once word gets out to foreigners that these arrangements aren't working any more.

Unless, of course, this is just another "rinse and repeat". But even in that case, it'll take years for the stink to subside.

Well you're making a grand presumption that the lawyers will be called out by name, and that this info will be made public. I seriously doubt that will happen.

Yeah but it's widespread, must be 100s and 1000s of lawyers involved from all over, not just a few mentioned

Hundreds of Thai 'Saul Goodmans' securing property for foreign interests. Perhaps people in that occupation are born, not made.

For my extension, I bring in 65k+ every month and my wife spends most of it. 1900 baht at the IMM office each year.

Not really... They don't have to be called out by name if the public realizes that the service they're offering is toxic.

Using a very imperfect analogy, I don't know the names of any Nigerian princes. But you won't find me sending ANY of them my account information so they can make a deposit.

Anyone reading in here (or on the Interwebs) seeing that nominee businesses are being taken down would be foolish to hire any attorney to form an illegal entity.

Their businesses were open again the very next day, many including in Samui kept it closed a few days. Nobody was ever in jail, this is a complete hoax story, all of them are free and about on Phangan today. There is indeed land seized, but nothing changed for operations on the land so far, for almost all.

So once again, it was one big show, so i doubt even more now to what extend we can even take this visa limitations serious.

Great they are cracking down at last on these farangs crooks. They KNEW it was illegal to own land/property.

Those 'crooks' were back in business the next day.
