To be honest, I have never experienced anything negative in Pattaya, or in Thailand one way or the other, and many others have had the same experience.

Anyone who reads the daily reports of fights, brawls, drunken disputes, etc would know that most of the reported incidents happen after 2 am....so if you want to "match" tourist behavior of violence in late night hours and extend til dawn? good luck with that.....what could possibly go wrong?

Palace hotels , places where the rich and famous come to stay, all the designer shops and just normal clothes shops , good clean restaurants and world class malls . All that you can’t get in Pattaya ! You have to give the tourists what they like/ want, and unfortunately in Thailand it’s cheap girls, boys and cannabis. In all the years I or my family/ friends have come to Thailand , we never buy anything , not even a decent swimsuit or bikini. What’s on offer, market stuff Singa T shirts. My niece stayed in a well known hotel in Pattaya and gave it a max of 3 *. She said the best thing there were the cleaners who were all from Myanmar. I really believe that the Thai politicians, authorities etc have never gone anywhere in the West. They have no idea what tourists want.

One look at the road death statistics and the state of pavements of Pattaya and they’d be on the next plane out.

Just make "Happy Hours" happy hours again and reduce drink prices by 50% during that time.

soi buahkaow is full of happy hour bars for 50/60 baht beers and a few with 70 baht or so big beers all day/night.....if you want to drink you can do so very cheaply....if you want to go into a place with naked girls dancing that is a different story altogether.

If nothing else we do get a laugh from all this rubbish. Can't count how many times in the last 20 odd years i have lived here that Pattaya was going to become a 'World Class Tourist and Family Destination' !

Amusing the topic is "world class" but the poster is focusing on his personal feelings, not what the world thinks.

By the way, my feeling is that tobacco smells much more disgusting than weed and the people that use tobacco in public (even when legally permitted) are not very bright to have gotten addicted to nicotine ignoring warning ⚠️ and cautions from doctors and scientists, even ignoring the warning printed on the label for decades, they seem overconfident in their own feelings, let's say.

Just like we see in Pattaya, or any day here on TV/AN

Well said. It wouldn't do any harm if they looked at the daily road death figures once in a while. I keep hearing about crackdowns on helmets etc. but see little signs of enforcement.

What a boring life if it only is based on drinking. Every day and whole day long. I am wondering if people would live in their home country they would do the same. Drinking from early morning to early morning. The entettainment venues should be closed at 2 am just to prevent this kind of behavior. Thailand is obsessed by alcohol regulations except when the entertainment industry is involved

The smell of weed is not the problem. It's that it attracts a load of tattooed stoners who want to get drunk, cause trouble and race around on their high powered bikes at all hours. The exact opposite of a world class tourist destination. Would you see those in Singapore, Da Nang etc?

Indeed. If what Pattaya has to offer is what the tourist wants, it is world class in that sense. And it’s true, extending licensing hours will make it even more attractive for that type of tourist, and hence, even more world class.

The issue is: is that the type of tourist that Thailand is targeting? According to TAT and Ministry of tourism, no. They want what they call quality tourists. Late night brawls, drunken behavior, public sex, etc etc, don’t seem to fit with that target segment.

Specifically, I never heard TAT or the Ministry for tourism say: we want higher numbers of people staying in 2star accommodation who have the propensity to behave badly, get drunk every night and engage in fist fights, so let’s extend licensing hours and get more of them.

But if the Thai tourism authorities want to call a spade a spade, then sure, go all in on Pattaya as a world class sex tourists delight and extend licensing hours. TBH, it’s not far from what they have been doing all along, they just don’t admit to it.

The first line is true.

But your second implies there's some connections between stoners and whatever that group is called, we used to call them Motorcycle gangs, but maybe that's not politically correct anymore since a lot of them are just rich tourists on organized tours being obnoxious.

Mob mentality happens all the time at sporting events where they burn cars and riot in the streets to "celebrate" their teams victory or loss, it really doesn't matter it's an excuse to run wild in the streets.

Most stoners I know just want to chill, maybe eat some good food and maybe smoke some more.

Most rich people I know think weed is low class, they're into fine whiskey, cocaine, ketamine or pills.

I think the people who dress up in leathers and ride in groups are hopped up on yaa baa (staying up all night) and then drinking to "come down" it doesn't work, you're still not going to sleep and you're just drunk.

Both ideas put forward are very bad. The entertainment zones should not be expanded and the hours should not be extended until 6am. Neither idea would 'boost' Pattaya as a world-class tourist destination--they would both do the exact opposite.

The city administration, itself, is doing next to nothing to 'boost' Pattaya. Infrastructure improvements, especially to the road system, are practically non-existent. The only things I have seen are some guard rails installed on Sukhumvit and some sidewalks being resurfaced for the umteenth time. Nothing hard or challenging is being undertaken to improve things, just easy stuff like the two I mentioned. No hard decisions are being made, like eliminating parking on some of the major roads to add extra travel lanes--North Pattaya Road desperately needs this.

The last road project of any consequence was the Sukhumvit underpass, and how many years ago was that? There were supposed to be 3 underpasses but only 1 actually got built--par for the course. The good things happening in Pattaya have all been done by private industry, when there should be good things being done by both private industry and the government.

Another new slogan for Pattaya. Lipstick on a pig comes to mind
