Graham died Saturday night “from a brief and sudden illness,” his office said in a statement.

“Senator Graham’s family appreciates prayers at this time and asks for privacy during this incredibly difficult period,” the statement continued.

Graham was chairman of the Senate Budget Committee and was seeking a fifth six-year Senate term in November. He was one of the most well-known members of the chamber and a key voice within the party on defense and international affairs.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Sen. Lindsey Graham, one of President Donald Trump's closest allies in Congress who traveled the globe to advocate for a more aggressive U.S. foreign policy, died after a tear in his aorta, according to a preliminary medical examiner finding shared by his office.

The tear in the inner wall of the aorta, called an aortic dissection, was related to the hardening of Graham's arteries. An official cause of death will be disclosed after toxicological and microscopic testing.

Graham, a prominent South Carolina Republican and former Air Force lawyer who served in Congress for more than three decades, had turned 71 years old just two days before dying on Saturday night. His office had originally said he had suffered from a "brief and sudden illness."

He was a supporter of both genocide and intervention. Not much wisdom. Humanity is better without him. He seemed to really love war and the military. But, at least he had the guts to stand up to Trump early on and to tell it like it really is.

During the 2016 presidential campaign, in which Graham was among many Republicans who lost the nomination to Trump, he posted on social media: "If we nominate Trump, we ‌will get destroyed ... ⁠and we will deserve it."

Graham told CNN in 2015 that Trump was "a race-baiting, xenophobic, religious bigot," adding, "He doesn't represent my party. He doesn't represent the values that the men and women who wear the uniform are fighting for."

However like most other Republicans he eventually capitulate. The one decent thing about the man was his constant support for Ukraine against the genocidal state of Russia. Rather fascinating how he supported genocide with Israel but opposed it with Russia.
