TEHRAN, IRAN: Iran has announced the closure of the Strait of Hormuz after its Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said it fired warning shots at a vessel attempting to cross the strategic waterway through what it described as an unauthorized route.

I suppose this is a good way for Iran to be totally obliterated as it surely will be if they try to completely close the Straits of Hormus.

As this their local waterway, they have every right to direct shipping as per their national laws, especially in a national security situation.

Hmm, which country is it, which talks incessantly about "national security" trumping every law and agreement?

Before somebody comes with "this is a strait for international navigation": if you are from the US, shut up, because both Iran and the USA have missed ratifying UNCLOS, so it is not an applicable international law for either of them.

Actually, if you are from the USA, shut up doubly, as you are allowing only national flagged ships going from port to port, doing pretty much the same thing that Iran wants to do now.

So, before pointing towards other countries in far away parts of the world, clean up your own shortcomings regarding international law and agreements. UNCLOS is just one, there are so many more.

The Geneva conventions, the Minimum age convention, Convention of the rights of the child, Convention against the discrimination against women, Convention against Torture would be just on the top of a long, very long list the USA should finally ratify, so they evolve from being the international pariah and terror state they are today: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_treaties_unsigned_or_unratified_by_the_United_States

They were completely obliterated months ago as per statements from Donald, Pete and others in this rock star administration.

Who are actually firing on US and GCC forces and infrastructure at this point in time is a complete mystery, although it might be connected to the recently discovered Islamic Republic of Japan.

It is not solely Iran's waterway. The straits are shared with Iran with 90% of the actual Traffic Separation System (TSS) lying in Omani waters. Iran has created a totally different scheme lying totally in it's waters and ignoring the internationally recognised TSS!

The definition of a Traffic Separation System (TSS) is part of UNCLOS. An international agreement, true, but Iran has never signed it and are therefore not bound by it. Oman did, so they are in their own pickle.

Who else did not ratify it: the USA. Hence it is pure hyprocrisy by the USA to try to hold Iran to the same "international law" the USA itself is not wantign to be part of, because immediately, they themselves would be in breach of it.

This does not mean that Iran blocking the strait is not a problem -- it is just not a problem the USA should be involved in to solve, until they have fixed their own shortcomings following international law.

I think a consortium of European countries, well known for their upolding of democracy, freedom and internaitonal law -- so the polar opposite of the USA -- are maybe the only countries able to have a moral voice in this that cold influence Iran positively.

The layout creates a unique geographic and legal dilemma: [1]

• The Omani Route: The standard, primary TSS for deep-water inbound and outbound megatankers falls primarily within Omani territorial waters. Because Oman ratified UNCLOS, they guarantee international transit passage. [1, 2]

• The Iranian Counter-Claim: Iran has historically threatened to restrict passage or enforce tolls, at times demanding vessels transit through alternative, Iranian-controlled channels to avoid overlapping territorial claims. [1, 2]
