Which Song do you play?

Featured Replies

it's 8pm. You are in a bar (doesn't really matter where). Outside small beer bar most likely. Computer and a couple of speakers behind the bar. Maybe 10-12 people in situ. Few single blokes looking desolately into the dregs of their Leo. A couple who look like first timers. A couple of couples of ageing expats with their Thai Mrs. Mixed age group.

You order a beer and the Mamasan pushes the keyboard towards you and asks "what you wanna play?". Pressure is on now. You have to read the limited crowd. You could pick a winner where you get the odd nod of approval, a few smiles or even possibly a patron telling Mam to shove a beer your way on their bill.

Other side of the coin is the nightmare scenario. You pick an absolute wrong 'un and clear the bar within minutes. Requests for check bins all over the show and it's all down to you.

What would be your first pick? If it all goes well, that's you set for the night - Superstar DJ. First choice is crucial - what's your follow up song?

No point in banging on Cosby Sweater by the Hilltop Hoods or similar as it's got to be a crowd pleaser. I would probably go with Take it to the Limit by the Eagles and maybe Sympathy for the Devil (Stones) as the follow up. After that, you've got the keyboard. Play what you want and if they don't like it, settle up and wobble on to the next bar.

What's your crucial first pick and the follow up song?

I did pop in a bar last night as have a mate here on holiday. Have known the owner for the thick end of 20 years. After a couple of self indulgent songs on my part, the girls demanded "I want it that way" by backstreet boys and "wherever you will go" by the calling. All members of said boy bands are just a smidge more attractive than my good self but I don't take it personally. Afterwards they put on "I'm sexy and I know it". They cut that one short when my fat mate started to reenact the video.

If just for myself, I would choose some upbeat mixes

But that's the whole point @Hummin , it's not for yourself (in the main). Mamasan has entrusted you with the keyboard for a brief moment trying to keep people in the bar, maybe even get a few passers by in as they hear the tunes. Can't really blast out a random that no-one has heard of just because you like it......

In Pattaya you could get away with this mix

And this one

For some reason, The Cranberries, Zombie seems to be a favourite standard with many Thai bands and it's classic rock for many expats, so that's a safe bet

Description of that bar, might as well stay topical ...

Currently, Zombie is a favourite here due to Nene Royal's success on America's Got Talent show ...

The oldie we love to hate, got to be one of the most played songs ever.

Lamyai singing this song about a grannie looking back on her life as a 'dancer' as in Pattaya Patpong

I would begin with some Mariachi music, like "No Hay Tortillas" (There's No Tortillas). After that sad song, maybe brighten things up with, "Dead Puppies Aren't Much Fun".

Never heard that before. Perfect 'afternoon having a couple of beers song'. That is exactly what I'm doing now ( as it's a Sunday). Played it to a few lads in my mate's bar and it went down well.

Music& Audio

It's an old song, from the late 60s or early 70s. Anyway, I always thought it was a good song to get things going. Terry Reid died not too long ago.

Saw him at my local town hall in 1967, he was with Peter Jay and the Jaywalkers.

Jimmy Page offered Reid the lead vocalist spot for the band that would eventually become Led Zeppelin. Reid had to decline the opportunity—and famously recommended Robert Plant for the role instead—because he was already heavily committed to opening for both The Rolling Stones and Cream on tour.
