What's morally wrong with covering all one's bases?

Sure, everyone loses 10 kg in 6 days. Looks like mother is lying and the son is a thief.

This is why you put all pocket items, wallet, watch etc. into your carry on bag, (zip it) when you put it in the tray to be X rayed. You never know if the little sheep shagging twerp next to you is

Correction.

The Kiwi boy was incarcerated for six days, not ten.

Still more than enough.

Another thing.

I think it's obnoxious to call a kid accused of a theft a thief.

People make mistakes when young.

It shouldn't define thier identity.

He possibly faces 5 years in Thai prison.

He'd be lucky to even survive that.

No doubt he would be raped a lot.

But that's ok with you and all the other sick sadistic cheerleaders.

Get real, you know he won't. Half sentence for admitting guilt . Seems criminals on the streets is OK with you, you are part of that problem! Name calling is a last resort of someone who has lost the argument!

So , a Man who knowingly takes someone's property , steals someone else's watch , is indeed a thief .

The man admitted it and returned the watch after being caugt red handed .

Its really not obnoxious to call a thief a thief .

Its a statement of fact

This guy is no threat to people on the streets.

But beware of him in airports!

Protecting the public from crime. is one part of it, but it certainly should have some penalty.

No you're wrong.

That implies that's his occupation.

There are people who are professional thieves.

Clearly, he's just a kid that made a mistake.

I guess in your inflexible world of no human compassion, a kid that takes a cookie out of a cookie jar without permission is a thief.

To add -- there is ZERO chance that you haven't stolen something in your life.

So are you a thief too?

Some penalty sure.

Any more time in Thai prison knowing the conditions in Thai prison -- too much.

He should get a neck brace and sling then.

The prisons are what Thailand has deemed suitable....if he wanted a more comfortable cell, he should have tried thieving at the other end of his trip!

You don't know whether he"s a serial thief or not .

Some people are honest and some are dishonest who steal

Hopefully this episode will teach him not to steal

I call BS>

You called him a thief based on knowledge of one alleged crime. That's all either of us have to go on here.

If he's in for any significant length of time it will leave him psychologically scarred and in need of therapy for trauma for life.

What kind of lesson is that? Destroying a young life over something petty.

It's how many think.

Some wouldn't steal a candy bar but will cheat on their taxes, evict a family into the streets for being a couple of months behind on rent, rape a forest to build yet another subdivision, purchase hookers and use them roughly, take money as a cop in a drug bust, use their position to take advantage of others in myriad ways, cheat on their wives or girlfriends, unfair labor practices, profit from sweatshops, let illegals work in their homes for pennies so they can stay in a country, lying about products that are unsafe, pour poisons into streams or bury them in the earth near watersheds, Ponzi schemes, targeting the elderly, claiming a computer has a virus to sell their products, romance scams and many more.

As far as the OP, the punishment should fit that crime, unless he has a record they can produce that shows past thefts this way. Petty theft, small fine, no jail. Jails cost money, for taxpayers, and some are hurt there and will take revenge on that later.

John 8:7. So when they continued asking him, he lifted up himself, and said unto them, He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her.

Hes admitted it , given the watch back, paid compensation , first offence

He will probably just get a suspended sentence and be on the next flight out of Thailand .

I doubt he will be jailed

With a strong sense of 'I won't be doing that again'.... lesson learned!

Let him go home.

Enough already.

People wanting to see his life ruined over a small mistake are likely bitter old men jealous of his youth.

A mistake is unintentionally picking up the salt instead of the pepper. Intentionally picking up someone else's property is theft. Albeit in this instance a minor theft which would probably normally result in a small fine and possibly a ban for a few years. He may or may not be a thieving toerag who will change his ways with adult maturity.

Thailandlanguage courses

But you said before you want him to get a year.

That's a very sadistic desire on your part again considering what we know about the conditions in Thai prison which he already experienced.

As far as admitting it and offering compensation, that actually doesn't prove anything.

Anyone that knows anything about the system here (and in other countries as well) confessing gets a better deal whether you're innocent or not.

So in many or most cases it's irrational to fight it.

Come, stop sticking labels on me .

I don't have a sadistic desire .

1 year jail sentences for thieves would be deterrent to stop people stealing , that's why theft isn't common in Thailand

Giving the same stolen watch back to the owner two weeks later is proof enough that he stole the watch

Jail; never stops people from stealing again. In fact many will take revenge after jail time. Learning the reasons they steal can help them.

Stealing is driven by poverty, and more people in Thailand steal than you'll ever know, from phone thefts, bag grabbing, scooters, credit card theft, pickpocketing, tourist prostitute thefts, food, farm produce and the many scams done here.

Giving a person a record has them harder to find jobs after a conviction, which leads to more thefts. Those into drug use will do anything to get a fix, so that problem needs to be addressed first.

alleged crime

Most of your posts on this thread are akin to the progressive liberal judges and prosecutors in the US where criminals, many times repeat criminals, are slapped on the hand and set free....meaning not holding criminals accountable. For the record, I don't believe he deserves any more time in a jail cell. But he did take the watch knowing it wasn't his....if he didn't take it, then how was he able to give it back to the owner?

And before you go off on another tirade about this kid is none of those, here are a few definitions from Search Assist AI. Tell me which ones fit this fine upstanding citizen.

A thief is a person who steals something, often in a stealthy or secretive manner. This term is commonly used to describe someone who commits theft or larceny.

Alleged refers to something that is claimed to be true but has not yet been proven or confirmed, often used in legal contexts to describe someone accused of a crime without a conviction.

Criminal refers to something that is related to or involving a crime, or it can describe a person who has committed a crime.

Stay classy.

It's remarkable how many expats have lost their moral compass if they ever had one.

I have to count on nothing...it's the way most of legal friction points get solved here..do you actually live in Thailand ?

Other than the mother's statement I have not seen any factual valuation of the Swatch.

She stated that she found ones 'similar' on eBay for US $80-100 and all media have followed that estimate.

Swatch in Thailand have watches 2150-17600 baht.

Whatever the true value, none of this would have happened if he had chosen not to take it from the airport security tray. The penalties already suggest to me he's been made an example of ... "bad foreigner!"
