ICC prosecutor Karim Khan sacked over sexual misconduct claims amid court crisis

The International Criminal Court has voted to remove its chief prosecutor, Karim Khan, over allegations of sexual misconduct, dealing a fresh blow to the war crimes tribunal as it comes under growing pressure from the United States.

The ICC's 125 member states voted by a large majority to dismiss the British barrister for what the court described as "serious misconduct and serious breach of duty."

Sexual misconduct allegations

Khan, 56, has consistently denied allegations that he engaged in sexual misconduct involving a female aide.

According to reports, he allegedly had a sexual relationship with the staff member and later attempted to discourage her from pursuing complaints. Khan has rejected all allegations and insists he was denied a fair hearing before being removed.

His legal team says it will challenge the decision through every available legal avenue.

Court under intense pressure

Khan's removal comes as the International Criminal Court faces one of the most difficult periods in its history.

The Trump administration has launched a campaign against the Hague-based court, imposing sanctions and travel bans on senior ICC officials after arrest warrants were issued against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defence Minister Yoav Gallant over the Gaza conflict.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has also vowed to persuade countries to withdraw from the court and reject its jurisdiction over American citizens.

Venezuela quits ICC

Within hours of Khan's dismissal, Venezuela announced it was withdrawing from the International Criminal Court.

The Venezuelan government accused the tribunal of focusing disproportionately on African and Latin American nations while ignoring other regions.

Despite Khan's departure, the ICC confirmed that existing arrest warrants, including those issued against Israeli leaders, remain in force and can only be overturned by the court's judges.

Search begins for successor

The ICC's member states must now elect a new chief prosecutor, who is likely to inherit mounting political pressure and the continuing dispute with Washington over the court's authority.

The appointment comes at a time when the tribunal is facing unprecedented diplomatic and financial challenges.
