Trump quality and arms dealers

[Opinion. “A certain level of quality”, a quality he has not brought to the Presidency. In fact, Trump thinks the only quality that matters is one you can buy. Trump is a man who thinks quality is something that can be bought and sold. Trump: All filler, no meat. Besides, I thought his “princess” (who he’d like to “date”) is daughter Ivanka. Probably too old for him now.

This superyacht required a crew of 35 to 52, all of whom could be bought and sold. Typical art of the deal: boat cost Adnan Khashoggi $100M in arms money.  Khashoggi was worth $4B, created by being middleman for arms sales from the US to Saudi Arabia.

Trump bought it for $30M in 1987, sold it for $19M in 1991 to a Saudi billionaire, Prince Alwaleed bin-Talal, the same guy who bought New York’s iconic Plaza Hotel in 1995 for $325M. Illegal immigrant? Not if you’ve got money.

Better stay out of the Caribbean. I hear they're bombing drug boats there. This sure looks like a druglord's yacht.

“A certain level of quality.” That is the phrase that Donald Trump returns to again and again to explain just why he bought Adnan Khashoggi’s 86 metre yacht Nabila. And an explanation is needed.

After all, Trump doesn’t water-ski or go in for swimming in a big way, and he’s always tried to avoid the sun. As a matter of fact, he has never owned a big boat before. He doesn’t even particularly like boats. “I’m not into them,” he says with a shrug, “I’ve been on friends’ boats before and couldn’t get off fast enough.”

So why spend close to $30 million on a yacht? Trump will admit that she is an “incredible toy”, even “the ultimate toy”. But words like that make the whole venture seem frivolous, so he prefers to refer to the boat which he has re-named Trump Princess, as “a work of art.” And what makes her a work of art is, of course, the “level of quality”.
