Hormuz deal edges closer — but Iran sets tough conditions

Iran and Oman say they are close to a temporary agreement on managing shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, but Tehran is warning that a deal on navigation does not mean the vital waterway will immediately reopen. Iran says the US must first end the war, withdraw its forces, lift sanctions and its naval blockade, release frozen Iranian assets and compensate Tehran for war damage. Proposed arrangements could also bar ships from countries Iran considers “hostile”. The US, meanwhile, wants oil and gas shipments through the strait restored to pre-war levels, meaning a deal remains possible but the gap between Washington and Tehran is still substantial.

Houthis widen attacks across Saudi Arabia and Yemen

Iran-backed Houthi forces have launched fresh attacks against a government-held port in Yemen and an Aramco refinery in Saudi Arabia, killing at least seven people in the strikes on the Red Sea port of Mocha. The Houthis claimed the attacks were retaliation for Saudi military action against them, while Saudi authorities confirmed a fire at the Jazan Aramco facility after a drone strike but reported no casualties. The escalation threatens to reopen Yemen's wider civil war and adds another dangerous front to the regional conflict, with attacks on both Red Sea and Gulf shipping routes raising fears that Iran's allies are preparing to widen the confrontation.

Iran executes protesters as post-war crackdown intensifies

Iran has resumed public executions of protesters as the regime intensifies its crackdown following months of unrest and war with the US. Human rights groups say at least 56 people have been executed on national-security charges since March, including 27 linked to January's nationwide protests, while more than 100 others remain at risk of execution. Three young men were recently taken to a public site in Isfahan for execution, amid allegations from relatives that prisoners were tortured into making confessions and denied proper legal representation. The UN has condemned the executions and warned that the death penalty is incompatible with the right to life, while Amnesty International has accused the international community of failing to put sufficient pressure on Tehran to halt the executions.
