Life terms for Chinese in Cambodia double murder

Four Chinese nationals have been sentenced to life imprisonment in Cambodia for the brutal killing of two compatriots, a case that has shocked Sihanoukville’s growing expatriate community.

The provincial court handed down the verdict on Wednesday, convicting Ren Jiasheng, 37, Ye Yiyong, 35, Jiang Bao, 49, and Huang Yong, 40, of premeditated murder under Article 200 of the Criminal Code. Each was also ordered to pay 300,000 US dollars in compensation to the families of the victims, Zhang Rujuan and Dong Yuanyuan.

The couple disappeared from their hotel in Sihanoukville on 18 July 2025. Police later discovered they had been abducted, killed and their bodies dumped in the Bassac River in Kandal province. Local residents found the remains five days later, sparking a major investigation.

A joint operation by Cambodia’s National Police tracked the suspects across provinces. Ren, Jiang and Ye were arrested near the Sihanoukville expressway exit on 31 July, while Huang and three others were detained in Phnom Penh on 2 August. Three additional suspects linked to the case are due to face trial separately.

The ruling comes amid heightened scrutiny of violent crime involving foreign nationals in Cambodia. In a separate case, 15 security guards were sentenced to 13 years each for a deadly assault at the Golden Harvest Industrial Complex in Kandal province last December.

Surveillance footage showed the men using sticks to beat four Chinese nationals, killing one and seriously injuring three others.

Both verdicts underline the Cambodian courts’ determination to clamp down on organised violence, particularly in areas where foreign investment has surged. Sihanoukville, once a quiet coastal town, has rapidly transformed into a hub for casinos, construction and industrial projects, drawing thousands of Chinese workers and investors.

Authorities say the influx has brought economic opportunities but also rising tensions and crime. The life sentences handed down this week send a clear signal that Cambodia intends to enforce its laws strictly, regardless of nationality.
