in 40 years I've seen the the baht to Cdn dollar exchange rate range from 16 to 35 baht plus .

I used to get a plate of rice with Penang beef curry for 5 baht by the railway station in Bkk

Change is the one of two things you can count on and your ability to cope and adapt will be the key to surviving.

The second thing you can count if you're lucky is you will grow old,weaken and die..No amount of magical thinking will stop this two things happening..

Want to enjoy the life style of working for little and enjoying themselves in other words you can't party for to long as the novelty will soon wear off

Us older retired expats have already enjoyed things when we were younger now married with family just enjoy out for a occasional dinner and beer not drinking at bars night clubs ect

Enjoy the retired scene slower pace plus the warm weather and beaches relax

I missed out on all the action as a young person, too busy with study and then work and marriage.

Age 50-60 in Thailand/Cambodia/Vietnam/Philippines was total party time though.

I started slowing down around age 63.

Inflation linked income for us, is my Soc Sec, and only 70% COLA since 2000. I think inflations has been way more, 100-150% over those 25 yrs.

Thai's minimum wage, if stuck in that tier, has more than doubled since, so a good thing, sort of.

To stay on top of inflation, we adjust & adapted. Biggest adjustments were downsizing home. Not for financial reasons, but took me 3 days +, just to cut the lawn & trim the hedges of 2 rai. Now it's a 1/4 rai

Solar & BEV, a direct cut of monthly expenditures, almost no monthly electric or petrol cost, Huge savings, since we abuse the AC, and drive sensely around, just for the hell of it 🙄

Wherever you are it works for a few years. Till it doesn't. Then you've got a plethora of problems.

In my 20 years of living there many of my friends were 10 or 20 years older than me, and I would say that a factor in many of them leaving was healthcare, and that is part of the money issue.

When I left I was 53, and I hadn't been screwing around or in a relationship for 5 or 6 years before I left, so I left with plenty of money. Back in the UK I had to pay 7 months rent going-in twice (nearly £4k a pop).

I remember coming over during the financial crisis and getting 90 Baht to GBP.

If 2000, and it was 40 to $1, actually went up to 45 / $1, short lived, but nice, bought 1st car then. 1st house paid for at 40 / $1 also in 2000.

Over the years, bottomed out at high 29/ 30 / $1. Been steady, 15+ years before Biden, USD stayed consistent, between 30 - 35. Which is fine. Biden was a pleasant surprice, with 35+ to USD, along with largest COLA, to Soc Sec, employer/govt pension plan.

Even now during DJT, who likes a weak USD, this administration started shy of 34 / $1, and now, still 33+ / $1 USD. In that 30-35 range, and makes most of us Yanks happy.

We're pretty close to B700k if we don't travel. Can anybody live in the West for that? Of course, we own our house and don't have a car.
