With that list of countries, none of which I'd even consider living in, Thailand seems to be the clear winner. I think most of us chose wisely 👍

Here, TH, or the USA, about the only two I'd consider basing myself in. If not for air pollution, maybe China or S Korea, though lack any experience with, although visa wise, difficult now. Mix thoughts and now experience on JP. Daughter loved it, but as a tourist.

Japan is a cool place and very easy to get used to - despite the lack of English signs. With the Yen once again deflating, it might be a good place to try out for a few months. Osaka would be a good choice and also Yokohama is a nice place and less than an hour into Tokyo Station on bullet trains. Yokohama is a port city and has a very cool old passenger ship, now museum, from the 1920s-1930's that you can experience what trans-Pacific travel was like in that era. I went aboard - they had redone all the staterooms and restaurant as original. It made weekly trans pacific journeys to Seattle and back with a stop in Vancouver. During the war, it became a hospital ship.

I remember seeing a poster at Jackson international airport in Moresby. It was advertising limousine tours of the city. In black marker pen was written 'daylight hours only'.

Yeah. The only positive memory I have of that visit (for work of course) was a Sunday brunch at "Airport Hotel". Food and drinks were great.

China and both Korea's are not on the list.

They are Asia too.

Yeah, and their Immigration Department is pretty hot on people doing the "visa run" method of a retirement visa. If I can, I may end up country hopping until I get too old; Japan for 3 months a year is top of my list.

Yes, I forgot N Korea. The other two wouldn't make the cut for the poll because they are developed countries/economies. Same reason I didn't include Japan.

No actually I wasn't considering religion. Just places that came to mind that I know I would prefer not to visit - never mind retire (I've been to some not all. I didn't include Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, central Asian countries, Nepal, Bhutan. Wasn't a racist thing at all.

Southern Thailand seems a strange choice. From personal experience there are some lovely people living there, and expats have lived there for years without problems. Burma was not mentioned either, nor the border areas with Cambodia that have actually seen conflict recently.

Yes, I forgot Burma. Didn't think anyone would vote against Cambodia as lots of expats live there. I didn't include Sri Lanka either. Not really sure why Bangladesh is getting so much attention.

Honestly, I would not live on the Thai side of the Cambodian border either. It is just a matter of time, be it now or decades from now. If a larger geopolitical conflict comes and everyone else is busy with their own part, old conflicts can suddenly get their final saying.

Many people in north Thailand, Myanmar, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia eat dog. Mr Google say over 2 million Cambodians eat dog.... I saw plenty of bats for sale in the Luang Prabang morning market. Just because you don't want to eat them doesn't mean they are not tasty :)
