Get the appropriate visa Simple

Not sure if you're talking to me but on the basis it might be than because I havent arrived in Thailand since April 2025 (and hence zero chance of any refusal based on too many entries) Visa exempt entry is the "appropriate" way to enter based on what I require personally. 60 Days plus option to extend 30

  • They're just going back to the way visa exempt has been for decades. The 60 day visa exempt was always meant to be temporary. If someone needs 60 days, they can spend 10 minutes to apply for a tourist

  • Seems Thailand is heading for hermit status

  • Too much information!!

Absolute rubbish. I couldn't upload the bank statement due to file size. I had to scan each relevant page, merge the pdfs then compress them. Got all the files to the correct size, took ages. All ready to submit the Trump decided to declare war on Iran. Complete waste of time. Might be handy if they didn't have such a low limit for the size of files.

"Personally requiring" up to 90 days is not tourism - and therefore NOT suited to a visa exempt entry.

You might have only 4 weeks holiday a year but not everyone does.

I dont qualify for a DTV because I refuse to sign up to some "bullshight" course that enables it

The METV also gives the same 60 days (plus optional 30) on repeat

Why should I be obliged to go down the Retirement Visa route when I simply dont want to retire to Thailand in the first place !

Like 1000s of others I'm a snowbird

What is it if it isn't tourism? Those of us not constrained by annual holiday entitlements would beg to differ.

Thanks for that @BrandonJT - will affect me so I studied it carefully.

As you say Clause 3 is where the explanation of the land border restrictions are shown.

As a legal document, it is oddly silent by not explicitly mentioning arriving by air but if you take Clause 3 to be an exception that it is the general assumption that most people will do so.

So is it sensible to infer that if one is flying into Thailand, there are no limits on entries WITH a Visa?

And to ask a slightly different question:

One up to 60 day trip with a Visa, and Two up to 30 day trips without a Visa all in the same year will be acceptable?

Your interpretation is correct, and it's basically just returning to the status quo. This is the same policy that was in place before the temporary increase to 60 days. Two entries per calendar year visa exempt at a land border, and no limit to entries by air. Do not confused "no limit" with unlimited though. Just because there's no limit written into regulation, does not mean you can live in Thailand on visa exempt. I expect them to continue as they have been, starting to question you if you've already entered visa exempt, gotten a 30 day extension, and then left and returned quickly. After ~120 days in Thailand within the last 12 months, I would no longer consider entering visa exempt if you don't want trouble.

But people who are rotational workers in the region should not experience issues coming for a week every month, etc, as there is no limit to how many times they can enter.

As an FYI to anyone interested, the Royal Gazette made the publication on August 31st, as expected. That means the effective date will fall somewhere between September 15th and 17th, depending on how they decide to count the days.

lets hope that becomes clear over the next 24 hours as I arrive 15th...

Thanks - as i thought. I live in UK and just planning a trip soon - enter Thailand WITH SETV (allowed 60 days), then after 40 days fly to VN or Cambodia for a week or 2 then back to Thailand for another period less than 30 days visa-exempt. Then back to UK and repeat the whole process 4 months later. but within the same calendar year.

And @hotandsticky If your time is your own, then "tourism" is whatever you want it to be and can afford. 😎

If you apply TODAY it should be - my last SETV in 2023 took 5 days from application and payment (05 Jan 2023 12:02) to receiving visa email. (10 January 2023 22:04) and it cost £30

Maybe put a note in (if there is a field for it) to show your travel date as 10th or sooner, explaining that the change caught you out.

Entirely predictably the website appears to have crashed somewhat

When putting in "current location" and obviously entering United Kingdom up comes box "You cannot apply for Visa from within Thailand"

Will try different browser lol

Talk about unlucky as regards the date of activation

Nope Chrome browser the same lol......just said to my mate whilst its unlucky if had been published tomorrow instead it would have been viewed as very lucky instead !

I applied yesterday, just short after midnight Thai time. That window popped up to, but it went away after I clicked beside the window (I think, not sure now). Anyway, it did not hinder me to apply for the visa. Maybe just give it another go.

Nothing is broken. That warning comes up for EVERYONE. It's an informational popup. Just click past it.

Have managed to use 3rd browser which has now worked and got past that. Uploaded Passport and Photo no problem

However putting in address its not letting me get past States/City or the other box City

(Have just put random detail in top line for screenshot obviously had proper address initially)

There is no option in the drop down box.....entering correct detail and move to box beside and it auto deletes !

Did you have the same ??

I have done this twice in 2023 from same laptop with no issues at all. Not sure what issue is thanks

EDITED sorted it using Firefox finally

Edited by Chivas

Hopefully that gets approved in time scale left. Acknowledged as processing on website and Email receipt received re payment

if that doesn't work, check your Windows Settings > Time & Language and the settings below them.

Oddly enough, I just got off the phone with a mate in UK who, when ordering Office 365 from Microsoft (which I persuaded him against!!) the price came up in Baht!

Turned out, one of his language / region settings had him as being in Thailand! He corrected that and it worked.

And pay the fee. Don't forget about that part.

I think 10 minutes is rather optimistic. Even if you happen to have all the required electronic documentation in the proper format, size, and at your finger tips. Usually takes me at least an hour or two. If you get anything even the slightest bit wrong it can easily get rejected with no refunds. I had that happen once on an METV that ended up costing me something like $150 US.

The only thing that will cause an instant rejection is if you put incorrect biographical information into the application. Wrong name, wrong passport number, wrong DOB, something like that. They specifically tell you to thoroughly check before submitting and give you at least 2 chances to check everything over before submitting.

Anything other than that, and they'll email you and give you an opportunity to correct your application.

Thailand to officially cut visa-free stay to 30 days on September 15, 2026 - VisasNews https://share.google/ISP8Sw8g65JYrSw4Y

I fly in on the 17th for a 6 week holiday, so I now need a visa.

I'm going through the Thai embassy in Canberra (Australia) and their website says 10 business days to process. I gave them a call to ask a few things about the application process, but it goes through to an answering machine.

My experience: Compared to most evisas the Thailand one is painful and asks for way too much unnecessary detail.

It took me about an hour, mainly getting the docs etc, and the website being very slow.

My main concern with the application is giving up all my bank details via the required Bank statement, as I doubt this info is very secure.

Also, I don't have any official confirmation of hotel booking, other than a short email to my usual Guest house saying "i'm coming" and their reply "see you soon".

The highlight of the process was when I paid and it came up with a big "there has been an error" and took me back to the front page, and my application disappeared altogether. It didn't show up at all on the evisa website (as incomplete or complete), but after about 10 mins the money went out of my account, and 5 mins after that it turned up on the evisa website as "processing".

As of yet I still haven't received any confirmation of application email.

If they're wanting people to spend more time in Malaysia or Vietnam then this is a good way to do it.

You're free to redact your account number or other personal information from your bank statements. I always do that when I submit them for visa purposes.

That's a really good idea, and pretty obvious really. 🙃 I'll do that next time. But when you say redact do you mean editing via photoshop or something?

Depends on if you are submitted a pdf or an image. An image you could use photoshop or paint to put add black boxes. For pdf you can use pdf tools to add black boxes/redact information.

LOL! In my case I call it retirement and go where I want when I want 😉

I am not the only one who thinks that 90 days is too long to be classed as "tourism"....this from Thai Immigration🇨🇬

"*** Requirements for visa-free entry

• A passport that is at least six months valid.

• Proof of onward or return travel from Thailand within the permitted period.

• Proof of sufficient financial means (may be requested by the immigration authority).

• A completed "Thailand Digital Arrival Card" (TDAC); this is mandatory before arrival.

The TDAC is now required; the old paper entry card is no longer valid. Every traveler must fill out the "Thailand Digital Arrival Card" online before arrival – whether by air or land. Complete this before your flight to avoid delays at the entry control.

*** Visa-free entry is only valid for tourist purposes and short stays."

If anyone thinks that it only takes 10 minutes or so to complete the application then thats wildly wrong

Took me 1 hour 40 minutes and 4 different browsers to finally complete it and I had done the same application twice in 2023 as well on same laptop albeit much quicker

On the flight details I have 2 separate tickets (the onward one to Vietnam a genuine one) but it wouldnt allow me to upload a second ticket with screen saying completed or words to that effect...so am expecting them to query that

Even the final payment screen claimed something had gone wrong and resubmit/check....it hadnt as it turned out when checking the bank and an email did come through with receipt

I got until close of business next Friday week for it to be processed based on Saturday/Sunday and flight on Monday lunchtime

Said to my mate seriously unlucky that it kicks in the day I land but added that if it had been the following day I would have said the complete opposite lol

All of this because they refused to accept a high 6 figure valued investment account for an METV instead of bank statements showing £5000 average balance for 6 months (which I know now is only 3 months from email from them)....good job I had the sense to ask before submitting that application with fee

I mentioned up the thread that Firefox was the only browser of 4 that allowed me to complete it

They are going to be obviously inundated with additional applications so am hoping that they have some sort of system that shows arrival dates of 15th September at the top of the pile !

Exactly the same experience. Likewise not received processing Email but received eventually payment receipt

Its showing on mine as processing on website so possibly they dont sent that one out

Your final line of text is absolutely on the money

(Edited in.....I see someone else mentioned about redacting address on Bank Statements. I would have thought that was an automatic decline for obvious reasons)

Glad you finally got through the system.

I hope that by December it will have settled down....So I'm an optimist.

Just "FYI"...

My last application in 2023 I redacted my bank account number and sort code but left the address visible - (I seem to recall you enter that as part of the application but I may be wrong, but I also used my Council Tax statement as proof of location and obviously that has my address)

The only email I received was when the visa was approved (5 days after application as I said above), but I also logged in and saw it as "processing" the day I submitted.

Let us know @Chivas - here's hoping!

As an aside - the fact that you had to try multiple browsers suggests that you either have extensions on the "failing" ones or possibly need to clear caches etc. Some detritus may have built up since 2023

Would be interesting to hear from others using Chrome / Edge as to whether they have problems.

Nothing in there defines what "*** Visa-free entry is only valid for tourist purposes and short stays."" actually means though - open to interpretation.
