What visa is she on????

She can’t legally work online the way she is on a tourist visa or any other non immigrant visa without a work permit. A business visa also requires legitimate local employment and a work permit. Thailand also does not offer a passive, low income residency route for people under 50 without substantial investment, legitimate local employment, or a specialized remote worker visa such as the Destination Thailand Visa, which requires proof of specific financial thresholds.

She could be on a one year student visa, but she would still be prohibited from working. It’s anyone’s guess. She may possibly be using an agent to obtain some form of one year visa, but that would still not make her employment legal.

The worst thing for a foreigner to do, if they’re working online in a gray area like that, is to draw attention to themselves by becoming the subject of an attention grabbing news story like this.

Published pieces like these can eventually attract the attention of local law enforcement, potentially resulting in authorities being forced to take action to prevent others from thinking that this kind of activity is acceptable in Thailand.

She would have been much better off keeping her mouth closed, keeping her head down, and staying off the radar instead of engaging in all this self promotion. I think young people who try to sustain themselves online through social media often don’t understand that.

I travel back and forth to America two or three times a year and I can tell you first hand that the cost of living back there has written so dramatically and inflation continues to rage unabated. The official government Trumpflation figures are totally fake, and it's likely between 10 and 15% annually. I often wonder how the average person gets by and I know people making well over $100k a year that are struggling. Unless you own a home free and clear things can be quite difficult back there. If you're trying to buy a house now or if you're renting it's quite a challenge.

I have a very close friend who lives in Burbank which is a nice section of Los Angeles but he pays $2,600 a month for a 65 sm. apartment. Plus electric, gas, water, and internet.

The cost of groceries is now $100 for a small bag and if you have to engage anyone to perform any labor task it's typically $100 an hour and up.

While we certainly seen inflation in Thailand it's my niscule compared to America and Europe and the cost of living here remains quite reasonable and many of us are very thankful for that. Where I really see the difference here is labor. I've recently found somebody to perform repairs, painting, handyman work, and landscape work around our house for 800 baht for an 8-hour day. The work is very good and he's very dependable.

I agree that the quality of life remains quite high here for those of us on a limited income coming from outside the country. Everyday I wake up in this country I feel quite grateful to be away from America and to have found a good life here.

Wow, so much negativity. If the story is true, good luck to her. Hard working, not stupid, probably has her head screwed on right. Why not try life instead of dreaming? I left a very happy home not even 17, traveling, always found jobs , enjoyed myself. Saw a big part of the world. Have had a wonderful career in south of France and now a good retirement. Still traveling and still loving Thailand. From 4 months a year I now am down to 2 +, but visiting EU countries that were always “too near” for me as well. When you work hard you can get on in life, although today is certainly more difficult than the 70s which was a fantastic part of my adventures, go for it I say, enjoy. Just because she’s a young lady doesn’t make her incapable.

Probably one of those Digital Nomad visas. Loads of them in Thailand. Shes also learning Thai so could be education Visa.

Possibly, but the digital nomad visa has additional financial requirements. Many young people don't have the savings required to qualify. Also, the education (student) visa doesn't allow you to work legally.

DTV of course. Anyone with an online business can live in Thailand forever doing border runs now.

23 years old, apparently no work permit, no savings, no means of securing a sustainable long term visa and no obvious employable skills in Thailand, but everything is absolutely wonderful and she’s found herself a “better life in paradise.” What could possibly go wrong 6 to 12 months from now?

Another Gen Z digital nomad come "online coach" apparently sustained by little more than an uncertain online hustle and optimism. I’m sure the honeymoon will last forever and there will be absolutely no awkward moment when things turn a bit wobbly.

Still, hopefully that lovely motorbike and, presumably, no expat health insurance never become part of a future GoFundMe campaign.

I suppose we’ll see how rosy it all looks once the high of living in the field of dreams wears off. Perhaps the UK will be waiting patiently in the wings for the inevitable return air ticket.

Good luck with it all... love.

How do you know:

  1. She has no work permit, (or even needs one if she has a DTV visa)

  2. She has no savings,

  3. Has no employable skills in Thailand

  4. Has no war to obtain a sustainable long term visa ( assuming she doesn’t already have one)

  5. Has no health insurance

You may be right on all counts, but you are just blowing smoke, because you don’t know any of those things as a fact.

I agree entirely- I recently returned to the UK to see family ad friends. The cost of living is absurd compared to Thailand- a big shop in 7 - 11 is typically around 1200 baht- in the UK a similar shop for similar items is around 10 to 12 times as much

Wor ked 7 days a week 3 different jobs had enough of it aged 23 😂😂😂😂

Ffks did that most my working life to bring up my family and still never retired to Chang mai or ever would ,, hope she’s got good healthy lungs

Just another airhead , que the gofundmystupidity.com a bit later down the line

The defining economic updates for September 15, 2026, break down as follows:

💼 Wages & Household Income

  • Record Median Income: On September 15, the U.S. Census Bureau officially announced that real median household income hit $87,460, marking the highest on record. [1]

  • The Wage vs. Inflation Battle: Hourly nominal wage growth is tracking at roughly 3.1% to 3.7% year-over-year. However, because headline inflation has crept back up to 3.4% (largely driven by global energy shocks from the ongoing Middle East conflict), real wage gains are historically thin. Many workers report feeling a plateau or drop in actual purchasing power. [1, 2, 3, 4]

  • Job Changers vs. Stayers: According to the Atlanta Fed's Wage Growth Tracker, those switching jobs are seeing higher pay bumps (5.0%) compared to those staying in their current roles (3.6%). [1]

Probably another on a DTV the one where you can't even open a bank account and have to leave every 280 days, mostly lay abouts with a laptop who know everything about Thailand after 3 months

good luck, but I see a euphoria of a new place will wear off soon and reality will kick in..

True story. The fascinating thing about 7/11 here is that it was designed on a very intelligent model ,where items are just slightly higher than they would be in a grocery store, and it makes picking up a few items there very convenient for many. In America 7/11 is a completely different model the prices are double what you pay elsewhere and I very rarely ever use them for anything other than an occasional lotto ticket.

Exactly, get up every morning, breathe some air, smile because you made it another day then go do something you like to do, not have to do. I wish her good luck 🍀

Agree. All the best indeed.

I can empathize having done the same and set up a life in a foreign country around the same age. She seems to be going at it with the right attitude - wants to make something out of it and really enjoys the place.

Hope she can take the knocks and the negatives as they arrise.

She'll probably meets some nice Thai guy and settle and have citizenship within a few years.

Or not. It's easy to look good on the Internet.

We'll see.

Sophia Moulson, 23 years old, what about your UK pension when your 80 years old.

It's not at all clear to me just how she's going to earn a living, but wishing her all the best in her endeavours.

That's what husbands are for. But if she's read through this post she'll have come to the conclusion that she can do without one those sad old gits for now.

that’s what my mate said about his second divorce to a Thai lady.

Filling a BMW probably costs more than 45 would these days. The beach picture made me cheekily smile.

She's a digital nomad right? That means she can, if she wishes, up sticks and move out from there during the smog season.

Have laptop, will travel.

I hope she has taken out health insurance ( not mentioned in the figures quoted) otherwise she is going to be in trouble if she has to be hospitalised for any reason,. Apart from that I must add to your comment ~ best of luck Sophie~but do take care.

I salute her, and wish her the best of luck.

But I'll be (pleasantly) surprised if she's still around in a year or so when the realities of work permits and taxes and visas and competing with the locals as a foreigner get, how to put it?... complicated.

I get the sense that she may be in the "She doesn't know what she doesn't know" phase of falling in love with Thailand. It looks easy. Until it isn't. (Like when you figure out that you need a Thai scooter license to legally drive a scooter around. Try getting one of those if you're not on the right kind of visa)

America is going insane. The homeless population is increasing dramatically. It is not only blacks and browns, I see so many elderly whites carrying carts and their belongings in the streets. Places where you would never homeless, now it is infested with them. Those people look like zombies.
