Lots of hotels and some cafes with wireless or LAN connections. Are you talking about that or some kind of cell network service?

Or GPRS/EDGE on your (suitable) mobile phone with a USB cable connection.

Naka.

You'll need a local pre-paid SIM that gives you GPRS/EDGE if you want to keep your costs sensible :o

Thanks how does that work exactly? I've heard of this but cannot get my head round it. I have a gprs phone but if I connected it to my laptop in Thailand who would my ISP be?

Not sure where you are from, but if your phone is unlocked, you buy a local sim in Thailand and they'll be the provider. If you are from the US, the phone is likely to be locked so you have to either call the cell phone company and hope they give you the code, or have it unlocked.

Use an Edge phone with the pre-paid 1-2-Call Sim cards and get the monthly "package". 100 Hours of use is 350B. The Motorola phones are easiest to use, as they have a mini-USB port and don't need a special cable... and you can find them pretty cheap with Edge.

In contrast, the hotels and other places I was at with the laptop wanted up to 800B per day for internet access in Bangkok! Criminal!

While Edge isn't great for big files, web browsing speed is reasonable enough. My biggest problem is when I get 3MB e-mail attachments; that's more of a protocol problem from what I understand.
