oh dear mate :o !!

This season seems to be an uphill struggle compared to last season. This time round makes for good entertainment with alot of sides looking very strong.

Though Mansfield lost for the 1st time against Barrow !! Must of been a culture shock going way up north for the boys & big Billy McCewan.

Still bloody hungover from the collapse at the end of last season. :D

Gulls' wings clipped

10:00 - 25-สิงหาคม-2008

Western Morning News

TORQUAY United have work to do if they are to challenge at the top end of the Blue Square Premier again this season, following Saturday's 3-1 defeat at Crawley Town.

The Gulls were their own worst enemy right from the start at Broadfield Stadium as they fell to their second consecutive league defeat.

Manager Paul Buckle's gamble on a massive reshuffle to his starting 11 was thwarted within ten minutes, after his side conceded the opening goal and had Tyrone Thompson sent off.

The visitors also conceded two penalties, while Roscoe Dsane's second-half strike offered them little consolation during a poor match.

Buckle responded to last week's 2-0 defeat to Ebbsfleet at Plainmoor by offering Michael Brough, Dsane and Matt Green a chance to impress in place of Danny Wroe, Tim Sills and Elliot Benyon respectively, while Lee Hodges replaced the injured Chris Todd at centre-back. Thompson was stationed at right-back, allowing Lee Mansell an opportunity to partner Chris Hargreaves in central midfield.

However, Buckle's grand designs were undone in the eighth minute when Crawley full-back Bradley Thomas's free-kick into the box was flicked on by centre-back Adam Quinn and finished at the far post by Jon-Paul Pittman. The Gulls were then reduced to ten men a minute later when Thompson was shown a straight red card for a hard-hitting challenge on home midfielder Lewis Killeen.

The disastrous start shook Torquay into more errors and allowed Crawley's centre midfield pairing of Thomas Pinault and Dannie Bulman time and space to dictate the play. The home side exploited the Gulls' lack of pace at the back by feeding long balls into the speedy Pittman's path.

The Gulls offered little in return as they sought to gather themselves, with their infrequent counter-attacks down the left wing, led by Mustapha Carayol, being the only cause for home concern. Those fears were eased when Pinault scored a 30th-minute penalty to double their lead, after Lee Mansell had flattened Bulman inside the box with a clumsy challenge. Torquay could have ended the half with nine men when Matt Green was fortunate to escape a red card for his part in an altercation with Quinn as arms and elbows flew back and forth.

The half-time introduction of Tim Sills undoubtedly lifted Buckle's men. The striker set up Dsane's 48th-minute goal when he headed a long cross into the box back across goal for his strike partner to stab home at chest height.

An unlikely point suddenly seemed possible for Torquay, but they were still prone to errors. Hargreaves and Mansell got their wires crossed on the edge of their own box in the 55th minute and the latter was dispossessed by Pittman, who fired a 25-yard strike which was tipped away for a corner by Michael Poke.

Sills was causing problems for the Crawley defence, however, and he won a free-kick on the edge of the box as he beat off two men in the air. Hodges opted to cross and found Hargreaves at the back post, who headed over from close range. Crawley then missed a similar opportunity at the other end when Simon Weatherstone headed full-back Sam Rents' cross over the bar.

The unfortunate Wayne Carlisle, who had to double up as a right-back and winger following Thompson's dismissal, nearly allowed Killeen to sneak in at the back post to convert Pinault's wayward shot across goal, but the danger passed.

Killeen was regularly finding space as Carlisle continued to tire. Pinault's cute pass from deep gave the wide man another chance to shoot from the edge of the box but he blasted over.

Despite the home side's possession in midfield, it was a long ball from the back which proved the Gulls' final undoing. Thomas played a hopeful ball up the right channel for Pittman to chase in the 76th minute and Brough handled inside the box as he moved across to intercept the danger.

I think if a team relegated from the Football League doesnt go straight back up the first season they may well be set for a few years in the Conference.

Look at the likes of York,Cambridge,Kidderminster,Rushden......even a big club like Oxford United.

How many years did it take Exeter to get out....five or six ?

Some ex League teams fare even worse.....Boston,Halifax,Scarborough :o

I agree, I think it is important to get out at the first chance. However, in some respects we may still have a bit more of a basis for gaving a better chance, a number of those teams were in significant financial difficulty, which in the case of Torquay is not applicable. In the end it's a tough league to get out of.+

Wow, what a difference a few wins put together makes. I really though your lads bubble had burst after last season.

It was a little worrying, but looking at some of the signings then there is no reason why we shouldn't be up there challenging.

Feeling confident for the visit of Oxford on Thursday evening?

No reason not to feel confident as we are in good form at the moment. It will still be a tough game though, between a couple of the pre season promotion favourites.

Oxford are crap, you'll do them over no sweat toadie :D

Not so the Stags last night, losing at Stevenage after having 4 points deducted for a dodgy player registration :o it's all going pear shape for the stags right now.

It's been a while since I posted, but in the end a good result for Torquay coming back from 2-0 to snatch a draw. I think that was the end of an 8 match winning streak, but still nicely set up.

Good luck to Chris Todd, who has been sadly diagnosed with Leukaemia.

Let's get out of this league this season.

Big surprise is Histon.....a small team doing very well.....but can they keep it up ?

I noticed your lads turned over the Stags the other weekend MrT !! After having the 4 points deducted the Stags have been in free fall. They'd better wake up or they'll be playing Blue Square North next season :o

Interesting to read Crewe want our Nigel for their managers position !! Can't see him being interested in them?

How about Calderdud?

I think Nigel will end up at Forest before too long.

at the minute it seems..........Allerdyce, Davies, Dowie & Aidy Boothroyd are the ones that seem to be favourites. Nigel never showed much interest before Calderdud was appointed, preferring to stay at the relative safety of Burton.

Sure you'd be happy with Allardyce though, wouldn't you? But, looks like Billy Davies from the paper talk.

Typical of our lot, advertising in on the official web site they've been in talks with Davies yet Calderdud is still in the chair :o Curbishley's name has been thrown into the ring but, he's waiting for his ":golden handshake" from the happy hammers before getting back on the tread mill.

Back on topic MrT, Oxford again in the cup so I believe ?? You'll turn tose lot over......they're crap :D

You said that last time, and we bloody well drew. I'm more interested in the league this season.

Well, a 2-0 win even with 10 men, will take that. A little dissapointed with the draw, getting Blackpool in the third round. Was rather hoping for one of the Big Three, Manchester United, Liverpool or Arsenal. :o
