What A Disgrace!

Featured Replies

I was shocked to encounter such an incident. Yesterday this American lady claimed to be working in London but is now holidaying in Bangkok went for a hair do in a salon.

She wanted a highlight on her hair and had agreed with the price, after bargained, and color shade with the understanding her hair require treatment due to her then damaged hair. After the highlight was completed but before rinse and blow dry, she started shouting and screaming claiming that the stylist had performed a lousy job that her hair color was uneven (she was not referring to the highlighted part of her hair, obviously her original colored hair after time will show dual tone due to newly growth hair). After the stylist trying to explained, she shouted again and claimed that her hair was badly damaged by the stylist and was causing her hair to drop and started pulling few hairs to prove her statement. The stylist was patient enough to explain to her wanting her to see the end result after rinse and blow dry. In fact the end result of her hair condition was even better then before and to me was perfect. This moment she continued her act again by shouting, scolding and intimidating the stylist and asked the stylist to stop touching her hair and walked off from the salon without paying :o

Why can such a cultured lady behave like a barbarian? Her behavior put shame to her country folks and to me she is worst than a beggar whom at least put in the effort to beg. She is a daylight robber, not only robbed away the poor stylist who was trying to work hard just to earn a living, she also robbed away her right of being a human. Now I understand why some were being labeled as bitch as they are no longer human anymore. I feel so sorry for the stylist as she shouldn't deserve such treatment.

I know I being over reacted as my girlfriend said that was none of my business. I just feel agitated and feel sad and bad that I didn't do anything for that poor stylist, I should have stood up for her :D

Just another reminder to never judge somebody purely by the way they look... :o

That was no cultured woman, it was a pig of a yank ! lets hope all her hair falls out :D

How to get a free hairdo 101.

People like that come from all countries and cultures. I've seen British, Canadian, German etc etc all act in a similarly abusive manner over my years in Thailand. Its not surprising that Thai people are beginning to get sick of it.

She's no lady!

Don't feel too bad you didn't act - as my sister continually reminds me, "you can't right all of the wrongs everywhere, all the time - you can only try when the time is right' x

I have seen a few over here like that, of various nationalities.

A few times if the circumstances are right, I butt in and tell them exactly what I think of their behaviour.

Unfortunately these type of people seem to be very thick skinned so I don't know if it does any good!

There are good and bad people everywhere, also among Thais. Why pick out a single yank?

Yeah, let's bash the yank post. I'm always amazed by the Europeans and Brits who somehow believe all their country folks are saints, and its only the ugly Americans of the world that deserve note. When in reality, most Americans travelling today are almost apologetic for their nationality.

I've seen incredible crap in Thailand, by Europeans, Brits and Israelis. I once heard what I think was this German guy severely insulting and shouting at the staff of "Pita Pan" on Suk. He was saying that they were so stupid, and they couldn't get anything right because of their little brains, and he kept going on and on, with his rented Thai male lover at his side. I couldn't take it anymore and did intervene. At least I deflected his attention from them to me. He shut the <deleted> up after a while, too.

Another time I saw a bunch of Italians on the sky train talking so loudly, as to intrude on the space and good will of everyone in the same car. I told them nicely that the volume of their voices was considered rude in Thai culture. They looked at me and actually said they didn't care.

*One other last thing: my first visa run was to Cambodia, to see Angkor Wat. I had studied the culture and history, but I was new to the road in SEA, and especially to Cambodia. I went alone, with very little money - because I thought it would be cheap - and figured it was only for a weekend and I would be back soon. I went the way of the Thai bus to the border, etc, and rode the back of paid pickup trucks in Poipet on to Siem Reap. Well, I'll spare you the details, but it was a horrible experience the whole way, and when I got in to Siem Reap 15 hours after leaving the border, I felt lucky to be alive, but was so stressed out because I knew I still had to turn around and do it again. I got on a minivan with a bunch of Australians on the way out, who had come in on the boats from Vietnam, so they hadn't made this trip yet. It's a long story, but because I was asking pointed questions of the drivers in the beginning - because of course now I knew what to expect - they started snickering about me and of course stereotyping me as an "American." Well, it wasn't long before we got on the van that drivers started their crap, first by overbooking the van and then trying to make some of us get off to go on a public Cambodian bus. They focused on me, because I was the only single female passenger, and I refused to budge, because after my prior ordeal, I knew the only way to stay safe was in numbers, and there was no way I was going to be separated. It caused this huge incident where the drivers were refusing to drive the bus until I moved, so that the other passengers would turn against me. To their credit, they supported me, and by the end of our trip, they were even more bitter and shaken by our road trip than I was.

your hyperbole laden and hysterical post is even more ridiculous than the incident you so poorly reported.

you'll get over it.

I don't see how someone being a <deleted> is also acting as a representative of their country? IMO they are just a <deleted>.

Even though I too would have found their behaviour annoying, I will admit that their response is quite funny :o

I think the OP was in fact trying to bash women instead of America. Notice the OP mentioned Lady and.. she this she that.

And the word American was only mentioned once in the post.

Well, that's what you think, and you're entitled to your perspective. My perspective is different, especially since the OP mentioned that she should be a disgrace to her country.

Yeah, that's my reading too, meemiathai.

I'm not excusing the customer's behavior, but my guess is that most farang women in Thailand for any lenght of time will at least understand the desire to yell at hairdressers in Thailand -- (while hopefully not doing it in reality :o )

I've had stylists:

dye my hair two different colors, and try to convince me it looked fine. This wasn't any kind of highlighting or "special" effects" requested -- one side of my head was one color, and the other, another color -- it looked ridiculous. They fixed it in the end, but I had to come back on the next day, walk around with my hair like this for a whole day, and and have my hair be damaged by being bleached and dyed twice in the space of two days.

neglect to tell me important information like: "if I rebond your hair, it's going to damage the color that I did for you last week, so you'll have to get that done ALL OVER AGAIN. "

give me haircuts that need 1 hour of styling. blowdrying and 3 different hair products to look good AFTER EVERY SHOWER (which is like 2-4 times a day), when I've said I want something low-maintenance because I don't like spending a lot of time on my hair.

stick a ton of product into my hair, so much that it looked like i had a big clump of crap in the back of my head, and try to convince me it looked great.

I could go on...

so...I sympathize a little with that customer's feelings, if not her actions. :D

That was my first reaction too, kat. But then second perusal came up with this

Now I understand why some were being labeled as bitch as they are no longer human anymore.

And I had to wonder, some of who? Americans? Women? Farang?

I agree with you, sbk. Note that it was also posted in the ladies forum, not the general forum (as I think someone who wanted to bash americans would be more likely to do)

Incidentally, one advantage of "country living" over "city living."

Out here in the sticks, you know you better not act like a jerk with the people you see every day, or life will become unlivable. (Does "tar and feather" paint a picture?).

In the "anonymous" city, you can get away with it.

westerners do have reputations for behaviour that the thais find insensitive at least and downright appaling at other times , and whereas the brits are known for their excessive drinking , thuggish no neck appearance , and propensity for brawling , the french for their aloofness and soap allergies , and the germans have their fussiness and endless complaining , it is the verbal aggression and its associated high decibel levels that are the mark of the american abroad.

i think the original poster was merely pointing this out , although her lack of tact clearly marks her out as either a belgian or a spaniard.

It was my impression that the OP was male, as s/he mentions a girlfriend. I guess it might also be a lesbian, or someone who refers simple friends as girlfriends and boyfriends.

Why do I waste time analyzing crap like this? :o

I am guessing that this American woman wasn't very tall or very short, not very fat or very skinny, or else the OP might have mentioned also a short and fat American woman. Then perhaps we might get responses like "Not all fat people are like that! or Not all short people are like that!".

Funny how I read it was just an incident about misbehaviour of a farang by the OP. But maybe my english isn't good enough to see that the post was actually about America.

The OP would have been a gay person if he was to name himself belle.

Ooops -- I stand corrected. Looking at the OPs posts, Belle seems to be a girl.

I guess it's possible to overanalyze, na?

Hi all ladies and gentlemen, if I'm being insensitive, I guess I would like to apologize for giving the wrong impression. To clarify. I'm a lady too and a perfect normal one. When I mentioned my girlfriend I'm referring purely to my friend.... as in a female normal friend. I have no intention to shoot down anyone (except expressed my agitation toward that mentioned behavior) or being racist.

Anyway just feel that at time we are being too accomodative and nonchalant, indirectly encourage such an evil behavior (of course I'm gulity of being one of them indirectly encourages them).

Belle, my post about bashing women was just a joke. Your post was very normal but of course there was anger in it for being the witness of this misbehaviour. In fact I did not realize it was going to offend anyone before I read the replies. :o

It is interesting that how different people focus on different things when reading.

:o Satirizes the gist quite well. Again, as the op verified, the most distinguishing feature here wasn't the lady of the story's gender, but her manner of complaining AND nationality, and the fact that other American's should be ashamed. This is a very common European put-down.

But, thanks to the OP for stepping in and clarifying, and even apologizing.

*Also I want to add, I can understand the OP's distress at witnessing such an exchange. But, if you have had your hair done any length of time if Thailand as a foreigner, what Canadian Girl explains is also very real.

girls, just go 'au natural'....cheaper easier and the only one u can blame if its not right is yourself:

maybe im out in the boonies too long but a pair of scissors and a mirror and a girlfriend to help out do wonderful hair styles...

daughter #1 just chopped off waist lenghth hair in one snip of her thick braid.... i did some trimming and there u go... a new army approved shoulder lenghth economy shampoo hair cut.

my own resemble an alpaca's fur, but slowly going grey and will stay that way... been cutting and trimming alone for 20 yrs after discovering that israeli hairstylists also go for the goo in the hair, complex styling and wanting to colour me deal, and their cuts never seemed to work (my mother claims its the middle east third world attitude towards hair, but she's an anal american who takes her poodle to a fur place every month for a bath and clip)

*Also I want to add, I can understand the OP's distress at witnessing such an exchange. But, if you have had your hair done any length of time if Thailand as a foreigner, what Canadian Girl explains is also very real.

Thanks Kat! I just want to make it clear that I don't think the person in question acted well -- but I understand some of her frustration.

Anyway just feel that at time we are being too accomodative and nonchalant, indirectly encourage such an evil behavior (of course I'm gulity of being one of them indirectly encourages them).

Well said!

Hey Belle,

sorry to jump on you like that. Thanks for the clarification about your post. It's more clear now what you meant.

There's A LOT of posters who like to bash farang women at every turn, so one gets a bit more touchy than normal sometimes. :o

I'm glad that I have clarified myself and thanks for all your supporting and understanding posts. There's a said, something like "what goes around, comes around" So maybe when we can more mindful and sensitive to each other the world will be a better place to live in. Am I sound like...... Ok anyway, CHEERS ladies! or perhaps I should include men as well (don't want to have another misunderstanding again).
