Hello,

I know this isn't a visa question but as you've all been so helpfull to me in the past i thought i'd give it a go!

When i eventually get myself out to Thailand (looking like Feb/March next year know) i want to take a small amount of things from the UK. I don't have anything big to take and when pacled will probably be the size of 2 large suitcases.

In your experances is it better to take them with me when i fly and inceer the excess bage cost or to try and ship them??

I'm in norwich and would be going to Pattaya but can collect from Bangkok if thats what the shipping needs.

My other half does want me to take them as they will be trinkiets, teddys and book but they're the things that make a house a home. If i can find out roughtly how much it is and see what the best option is i can work on him to get them out there!!!

Hope this makes sence and that i'm not being a pain!

at the end of the day it depends on weight and cube. it also depends on which airline you are flying and what class you are flying and are you frequent flyer etc. At one end of the scale if you are a (say) gold card hoder with Thai or SIngpaore Airlines or BA and you are flying business class then you probably get away with 40 to 50 (or even 60) Kg for both of you without any trouble. If you are flying econ on a cheepo deal then you are probably not ging to get away with very much without paying excess. The airlines should be able to tell you what the excess charages are if you ask them.

Another option is to pack them securely and send with reputable shipper - they will consolidate with other packages and charge you a consol rate for a sea shipment - they will take care of everything and delvier to your door in the UK. PM me if you are interested and I will give you the name of a good Brit in BKK who works for international shippers dealing only with personal effects. I used them and he was top class.

thirdly - break it down to a number of handleable sized boxes and guess weight and size and nip down to local post office - see what it would cost to ship via sea or air mail - you might be surprised

We shipped some stuff out from the UK 3 years ago, it went by the volume of the crate with a limit on weight, a two cubic metre crate not exceeding one ton cost us 110 pound to ship and about another 100 when it arrived. The wooden crate had to be fumigated and have a certificate and cost 75 pounds.

We also took about 30 kilos overwieght with Thai and they charged us 170 pounds so maybe this would be a better option if you only have small things to take.

The shipping company we used in the UK was Hankyu, they have a local office in Bangkok at Ruamrudee.

Hope this is of help to you.

I like the last 2 - have to say never even thought of post office!!! But i could be the easiest and cheapest.

What would i have to do for the 2nd? sounds a bit complicated to me? did you find it like that? is there any restrictions?

Thanks, will see what they say too. I'm just trying to get my head round what to do really. think it'd be easier with a house to move!!!!
