Hi,

Has anyone noticed a doubling of TOT's connection speed? I use GoldCyber which is 1024/256, but this morning my download speed, which was averaging about 100 KBps, is now over 200 KBps! Hope it lasts forever. :o

I signed up for the TOT 1024/512 package last week and when they connected it on Friday they said they have a new promotion starting that day for 2 meg (?) for the same price for gold cyber clients. Mine still hasn't gotten over the thousand mark yet though!

Just read in the paper that TOT is looking to add 1M users to it's existing user base of ... 400,000!

I sure hope that that happens _after_ Thailand gets that new underseas cable to the U.S.!!

Posted (edited)

I have the 1024/512 package as well here in the South of Thailand, Speedtest.net tests show 861 and 71 respectively.

I use UTorrent and the torrents are considerably slower not peaking about 45k per second but come 2am it all goes full speed again until 9am when it crawls to a stop again.......... Are we still experiencing problems with the underseas cable or is this the dreaded packet shaping of my torrents??

Thanks

JAF

Just checked my speeds to Karachi on Speedtest.net and got 64 and 16, there must be a problem right ?

Yes you are right, should not expect so much fromKarachi but its the same story for New York, Singapore and Indonesia........ only the speeds to BKK are acceptable. Is that the only speed I should be checking when torrents are going half speed ? As I said before, at 2am the speeds increase full throttle and I am wondering whether we still have problems with the underground cable that was damaged recently ??

Cheers

my best guess is that the culprit is the well known bottleneck that exists between Thailand and the international connection. i too realized a big drop in speed during day time. here's a measurement a minute ago:

Seems to be a commonality my ADSL in Saigon is fast up to 0800Hrs and then the brakes come on.

How is it that you guys on gold cyber can get such a fast connection...mine never goes over 960 kb/s and it's supposed to be 2000! Is it to do with proximity to BKK, major city or something??

I use GoldCyber which is 1024/512, about 2 days ago my speed went down to about half the normal speed (512 upload) , the next morning I was very surprised to see that it has doubled to about 2 megs, I live in Mae Rim, Chiang Mai.

I've just checked my modem (DB120) and I found indeed that my (automatic) connection settings have changed from 1024/512 to 2048/512.

I haven't check the current speed yet.

Thanks to all posters bringing this change of TOT to everybody's attention.

Well now I am getting similiar speeds to Monty but my torrents have slowed to a crawl. Previously, about 2 weeks ago I was receiving my torrents at 90-100 kbs at the speed of 1024/512.

Now thats its supposedly been enhanced to 2048/1024 my torrents download at 20kbs but my Speedtest results show 1750 kbs to Bangkok and 980 kbs to Singapore. Only at 2am does it pick up speed

Is anyone ls having the same problems with Utorrent right now ??

Cheers

I had the same thing. It is hard to determine what the cause is. It could be your ISP or your torrent-file. What I advise you to do is download a torrent of the site below.

http://distribution.openoffice.org/p2p/index.html

If everything is okay, settings in UTorrent and your ISP, you should get high values.

I downloaded 2 times on Saturday morning, 22nd September. The first time I reached values of 150 kB/s and the second time I reached 113 kB/s.

See the picture below. The peak at the picture is the first time download.

My conclusion for now is that the swarms of my other torrent-files are slow.

Yes it appears you are right........ when downloading this file my speeds jump up to 170 kps and thats only from seeders, it did not connecto any peers. Seems my other files which are slow also have thousands of seeds but few peers so it might be a problem with the swarms or the website I got the link from. At least I know its not a problem with my line

Many thanks for your help Petch

JAF,

Very welcome. I forgot to tell you that you're right about 02.00 h AM. I didn't know that before. Below you find a screenshot I made of the modem activity last night.

I have a modem in bridge-mode and a wireless router. I had set my QoS of my router to a maximum bandwith of 1024. That's why I have never noticed the change at TOT until posters on this forum wrote about it.

I like that program you use to show usage Petch. Can I use that with my speedtouch or Zyxcel modem ? or is there something similiar that you might recommend.

As to the other poster, to achieve the best speeds you really must be sure that your computer is clean of all spyware and malware and this is best checked in safe mode. Using just one program to check for nasties is not enough, you will need several.

I use Ad aware, Comodo BOclean, Spybot Search and Destroy, AVG Antivirus and check often using TrendMicro Housecall online scanner. They are the free ones and I would recommend them all.

I also use XoftspySE but you have to pay for that one

Hope it helps

My wireless modem is a Linksys WRT54GL with third party firmware Tomato 1.07. The posted graphs are features of it. This firmware can only be uploaded to a very specific group of routers such as some Linksys models.

I don't know about external programs that could do the same job but they should be available. The main difference would be that these programs measure the LAN-activity on a specific computer as where the Tomato program measures the modem activity.

TOT has changed the pricing structure of their ADSL offering. I can speak about the GoldCyber package pricing.

The 'GoldCyber' 1000/256 package was 1000 baht per month. Now reduced to 500 baht per month.

Existing customers can choose to remain at 1000/256 and have their monthly cost reduced to 500.

If you dont make a change - they will continue to charge you the 1000 baht per month, but increase the speed to 2048/512.

Changes are being made at the Phone Exchanges as they can get around to it. So not all areas (including me) have seen the change yet.

I was told my speed would change to 2048/512 in a week or so. Chiang Mai area.

I called into the local TOT office to get the above information. I had to ask counter staff. There was no notice around to advise of the change.

I guess they are quietly hoping that users will keep paying the same price, and be happy to get the higher speeds.
