Petanque is the French equivalent of bowls.

As most towns and cities in France have trees along some of the major streets, it can be considered as 'gutter bowls' as against the British 'lawn bowls' or 'crown green bowls'.

To play one has three steel balls about 4" in diameter per player, plus the jack (smaller and lighter). The object is to get your bowls nearer the jack, as with ordinary bowls.

It is played virtually anywhere and everywhere. A fairly hard surface is best, such as the verge alongside a road, or a gravel pathway. Not too clever on soft grassy ground, and on beaches it is best to use plastic balls. (Lighter - made specially).

Dress - should always wear braces on your trousers, or hold them up with string. Roll halfway up the calves. Smoke Gauloises incessantly, mutter various French imprecations through the soggy ciggy and swill red wine from an unlabelled bottle.

Well that absolutely confirms it then! Nothing at all to do with pet cats and dogs. I'll just have to stay home instead.

And the signs on the road have a cute little pet rabbit on them How misleading, I'm so disappointed :D

May actually be worth going though just see all the trousers held up with string. :o

But you would have to cut your way through all the Gauloise cigarette haze - and to watch Frenchmen playing with their balls?
