Northeastern floods worsen

YASOTHON: -- Many provinces in Thailand’s northeastern region are still deep under floodwater.

Continuous heavy rain and the rapidly rising Chee River has left the area heavily flooded.

In Yasothorn, the water level rose over the village dams, flooding ten villages in two districts.

In some areas the floodwater rose to more than two metres in hieght.

Local residents were evacuated from eight villages, and are currently sheltering in temporary accommodation on higher ground.

Five schools in the affected area have been closed.

Excess water has been released from the Lampao Dam in Kalasin Province into the Chee River, causing flash flooding in many villages in the nearby Roi-et Province.

More than 10,000 rais of farmland (2.5 rai = 1 acre, and 100 acres = 1 hectare) has been inundated with water.

Flat bottom boats are the only means of transportation in the Roi-et area.

In Kalasin, water from the Phupan mountain ranges has flown into the Pao River, causing many villages to be flooded.

More than 130,000 rais of rice fields have been destroyed by the flooding.

Many farmers have lost their homes and crops.

These villagers have urged the government to help create jobs so they can earn an income to replace what they have lost as a result of their damaged farms, a local village headman of Chaengjom village, Pim Arunrat, told TNA.

For many of the areas in Yasodhorn and Kalasin, this is the fifth consecutive year that heavy flooding has affected their farms.

The repeated flooding has forced some villagers to moved out of the areas altogether.
